The Wines

100% Syrah (av age 30 years), half northern sector (Les Grandes Places), half southern sector (Le Combard, Lancement), so mixes schist & gneiss soils, 75-85% destemmed, cool pre-fermentation, 2-3 week vinification (down from 3-4 weeks since early 2010s), pumping overs, twice daily cap punchings, aged 25% new (until 2006-07 was 80%), 75% 1-6 year 228-litre oak casks 16-18 months, unfined, filtered, “drink with red meat, duck breast”, 6-12,000 b


(casks) dark robe. The bouquet is well weighted with cassis and blueberry fruit inside a cloak of oak; it persists steadily. The palate sets off well via a wave of attractive black fruits that carry fine juice, and tannins that have clear spark. It ends freshly. It is balanced wine that will evolve with good style. (casks) dark red. The nose gives a lead aroma of crushed loganberries, mulberries, with a note of central sweetness. It’s a clear opening. The palate swings along with some tasty red berry fruit and tannins that give a gummy texture towards the close. It’s quite a downhome style of Côte-Rôtie, with the second half not as refined as the front runners. The aftertaste is a little dry. 9,000 b. €22.80. From mid-2018. 2026-28 Oct 2016

2014 ()

(casks) dark colour. The nose is sultry, brooding, has potential and width; mulled black berries come with a “high” note. The palate delivers mulled red fruit, has a bonny abundance about it, lengthens with a sure hand. This will be enjoyable and authentic. 12.5°. 9,000 b. €22.80. From 2018. 2026-27  Oct 2015 


2013 ()

(casks) shiny dark red. Has a raspberry front aroma, with a violet essence present, shows the “crackle” of this fresh vintage. The nose is clear, as is the palate, which gives attractive red berry fruit with some tang, and a floral ease as it finishes. Agreeable, low-key gras here. It is well ordered, in the vein of the vintage, has good, naked qualities, no make-up worn, can gently gain weight. There is a wee glow on the aftertaste. 12.5°. Only 6,000 b. €22.80 export. 2012 ()

(casks) dark robe. Well-filled black fruit-oak nose, has a crunch of depth, the fruit pretty sleek, efficient. This has a restrained, careful debut with a gain in intensity, ending still running. Its oak is gradually absorbing. Solid structure, no nonsense. Modern feel wine, plenty of oak. From 2016. 2025-27  Nov 2013


(casks) dark red. The nose doesn’t reveal a lot – it is wide, sustained but precise notes are hard to come by. At the moment it represents a compact block of red berry fruit. The palate has good heart, good filling: it weighs in well, has a core of cooked red fruit. The second half has a tea, toffee, hot stones nature, ending on a tight, fresh combination, with the red fruit reviving, accompanied by a cigarette smoke touch. From late 2014. (casks) dark red; very smoky, leather, near varnish influence on the nose, a smoky black chocolate – this is a very young, still on the raising start, has good, clean lines. The palate reveals a tidy, good northern zone ping, and stylish, clear-cut black fruit. It travels straight along, but all the elements are in equilibrium. No-nonsense style, clack. It is a tiny bit stiff for now. Good promise, balance. There is really good precision in its fruit. From 2015. 2025-27. Release spring 2012. Nov 2011


(casks) mid+ depth of red. Backward red fruits nose – has few grilled airs, is not really expressive, could be brighter. Some scenting and the soil of a damp forest present. Spicy, red jam flavour on the palate – a traditional style Côte-Rôtie with baked elements in the flavour. Does not have a big, broad horizon ahead. Grassroots style wine, length OK. (casks) fair depth of red; biscuity, raisin-like aroma, with vanilla pod present, grilled nuts. The palate shows a line of green oak, a little scent in the red fruit, a cherry flavour as it nears the finish. Mild late gras here, helped by the oak caramel. A composite styel wine, got up in difficult circumstances; its fruit is on the limp side. Date and toffee aftertaste. From early 2011. To 2018. Dec 2009

2007 ()

(casks) full, dark red; fundamental overlay to the nose as it airs – honey, black raisin, toffee aromas, ripe red plum at first. The palate has an incisive start, with acidity lending a raw, acetate edge. Some obscure black cherry fruit emerges late on, and it ends on a little gras. It is very unfurnished for now – patience is needed. From late 2010. 2018-20 Dec 2008


(casks) red plum colour; red berries, raspberry aroma, with a sweet, jam air to it. A debut of red jam with a sweet siding on the palate, it proceeds steadily, without fireworks. Is sweet throughout, has a little closing up from some mild tannins. Correct length. A safely done wine: no offence, mate. Touch of late pepper, is drinking OK now, though not yet bottled. 2014-16 Nov 2007

2005 ()

(casks) dark, full robe; raisin, rich prune aroma with some chocolate from the oak, shows a hearty, ripe gourmandise. Rich, a little sweet start to the palate that holds plenty of gras from its ripe crop. Extends fine down the palate – this is a rich vintage. The oak restricts the flow for now – is a thick wine in style. Esp 2009 on. 2017-19 Nov 2006


bouquet combines black fruits, some leather, oak, is oily and more to come here. Tasty fruit on attack, red berries, easy to dash down a glass of this. Polite end tannins, a little licorice from them. Oak surfaces on finish. Very drinkable, well made, though fruit is a little extracted. 2013-15 April 2006


(cask) decent schist-style bouquet; has cool flint in the violet/black fruit. Black fruit, peppery tang on palate, is rich, has a southern, warm finish. Soaked berries, tannins evident. Modern wine, is sound, has potential. From 2007. 2017-19


hidden nose, firm tones; some black fruit, oak makes the wine firm for a Côte-Rôtie. Overtly dry, touch stern ending.

2000 ()

roasted fruit, lost its floral side, light pepper nose; now upright, tightening, quite warm red berry finish. Firm, schist style wine. Cool texture, can broaden. From 2006-07. To 2011-12


robe still full. Mulberry, jammy, earthy bouquet - good and deep. Although quite international (oak all through it), has moved to a more interesting second stage - dried fruit, prune presence with some pretty violet. Has regained some local imprint, is still a fresh wine. 2014-17 March 2005
