The Wines

1963, 1964, 1965, 1970 Syrah from Sarras & Ardois, granite soils, mainly destemmed, 15-40% whole bunch in bottom of vat for draining effect, wild yeasts, 12-17 day vinification, pumping overs open to air until 1030-1040 specific gravity, then closed pumping overs, aged 60% 1-2-3 year 228-litre oak casks, 40% new 600-litre oak casks 20-24 months, fined, unfiltered, "drink with red meat, game", 2,700-4,000 b

(casks) dark robe. The bouquet is upright for now, but well filled. There is a good inner aroma of decisive, ripe black fruits, with some notes of oak. The palate gives a fresh stream of black berry fruit with a tangy tannin, a well installed freshness, towards the finish. This will shape up well into a lively full whole, has real verve. It drinks with definite gusto, great with beef steaks. 13°. 4,000 b. 40% whole bunch this year. From mid-2018. 20225-27 Oct 2016

(casks) dark, full robe. Well-measured, promising, fresh nose that has balance between the fruit and the tannin. There is an air of light, inviting violet and oaking. This is shapely, orderly wine from the modern school, so it mixes oak and free running black berry juice. The oak rules the late roost, and it ends on black raisin, a note of mild cocoa. Harmony is accentuated here. The length is sound, it flows very well. Strong elegance and purity of fruit here. Suited to clear flavoured dishes. From 2014. 2020-21  Nov 2012

2010 ()

(casks) ample, bright robe. Red berry and cassis fruit come in a nice wave, along with some polished leather, a more grounded influence also. This has a full, notably orderly ripeness that also brings in licorice, black strap notions. Attractive, fragrant raspberry fruit on the palate, which picks up still present ripe tannins towards the finish. The finale delivers juicy black fruit, a serene ending, with pebbly-tar style tannins. Solid length, promising wine. Complex, varied, and hidden for now. Picked 14 October – that is late, chief. pH of 3.30. Very good balance, lot of heart in this. 2024-26. 3,000 b this year. 13.2°. June 2011

2009 ()

(bottling soon) comfortable, full robe; the first impact on the nose is smoky oak and tar, then follows oily black fruit, compact black berry airs, licorice. The palate is a textured affair, with good build-up of black fruit, late freedom. The attack is led by black cherry, the mid-palate holds up and it moves well, ending on some tar and complete, chocolate-style notes. Sound and together from spring 2012. Aged 25% new, 75% 1-year 228-litre oak casks this year. 2023-23 June 2011
