mainly northern sector, 90% Syrah, 10% Viognier from young vines, destemmed, 3 week vinification, pumping overs, cap punchings, aged 50% new, 50% 1-2 year oak, 20% of it American, 90% 228-litre casks, 10% new 600-litre casks 18 months, unfined, filtered, sold in 50 cl bottles, mostly in France, last vintage 2011


the bouquet bursts out, thanks to a big stampede of running red fruit, along with licorice and smoked airs. It has an explosive red fruit attack, wham! Oak is still coursing through it, meaning it needs leaving for 18 months if you want a more mature drink, but it can also be drunk now for its vigour and sexy appeal. Modern Côte-Rôtie, zappy and up, has really good drive. There is a live tannin ending that is a bit cutting. Versatile food wine, w.o.w. – great with steak, explosive with St Felicien cheese. 2020-21  Feb 2012
