100% Syrah (1970, birth year of V Liotaud) from stony, hot limestone soils at 450-500 metres, av yields 35 hl/ha, destemmed, 2-3 week vinification at 26-28°C (reduced from 30-32°C since 2010 to have softer tannins), pumping overs, some cap punching, aged 10% new, 90% 1-10 year 228-litre oak casks 12-18 months, fined, filtered, “it can be a bit rustic when young, so decant it to give it a chance to express itself,” 9,000 b

dark robe. The nose shows reduction, an air of blackberry jam along with herbs – this is a nice dark aroma. There are bonny drifts of violet through the palate, good energy and clarity in it; fine grain tannins and still a touch of oak are also present. Has good Syrah “fire”, directness, indicating its fresh environment rather than the heated shores of the Med where INAO decrees state everyone must plant Syrah to improve things.
