The Wines

1950s Syrah from 1.8 hectares on Les Murettes on Les Côtes (1.3 ha 1960s, 0.5 ha 2002), crop cooled, destemmed, 5-week vinification at up to 25-30°C, twice daily pumping overs, aged 50% 2-3 year 228-litre oak casks & 50% 2-3 year 400-litre oak casks 12 months, fined, filtered, 4-6,000 b

(casks) the robe is dark, more matt than bright. The nose gives sweet, slightly lush fruit with a musky perfume attached, has a soft depth. The palate is also sweet and perfumed, is open access Cornas. It develops a little mineral thread, spine, towards the finish, which is welcome. The aftertaste is well fruited, generous, the tannins just a bit clipped there. It’s not a Cornas of great typicity and structure, but drinks well enough. From 2021. 2037-39 Dec 2018

2016 ()

(casks) deep, dark robe. The bouquet is broad, holds up well, has a shininess in its black fruits, a good depth, shows oak. There are hints of flowers, sweetness. The palate is openly juicy, cool blueberry fruits present with a flavour of licorice streaming into the tarry finish. Its raising is showing strongly for now, the oaking and its nuttiness, witness the oak sweetness on the aftertaste. There are fresh moments through it that keep it rolling along. From spring 2020. 2030-33 Nov 2017

dark red, purple tinted robe. The nose presents raspberry jam, is a soft and plump start, a good pile of red berries, the fruit with a “high” note, along with cigar ash and tar. This is sun-filled wine, bears richness, red blood, develops firm tannins and Cornas grip, mineral, stones, towards the finish. Raspberry and plum lie at its centre. These are grippy tannins, with no holding back. It has a suave debut before the tannins. 13°. Bottled Sept 2016. From mid-2019. 2031-33 Oct 2016

2014 ()

full, deep robe. The nose has a brooding quality, a slightly sweet depth of blackberry, simmered berry fruit. There is an air of licorice and menthol as well. The palate delivers agreeable large red berry, mulberry fruit, with a set of sweet tannins. There is a downhome, slightly stewed quality to the fruit. The finish is a trifle worked on, pushy. 13°. 4,000 b. €18. From 2018. 2025-26  Oct 2015

2013 ()

dark robe with black tints present. This has a sleek, rounded black berry aroma, a nice and curvy bouquet that is pretty precise in its definition, offers a hum of violet in the background. The palate comes with an attractive, cool, blueberry style fruit, rolls along freely, and links very well its content and its tannins. A stylish, modern Cornas that is more on fruit than depth. The length is sound. It could be accused of being a little tame. From mid-2016. 2025-27  Jan 2015

magnum: full, dark robe. The nose features sizzled bacon, dark berries, black cherries, licorice, is well varied. This is well framed around its tannins, holds beau gras at its centre, and reaches out well, with purpose, and really extends to the finish, showing great persistence, with delightful notes of herbs on the aftertaste. A genuine, STGT Cornas from a mix of young and old vines, one that has drive. 12.7°. 2027-29  Oct 2015

(casks) dark, thick robe; mineral-tea-toffee air, with a peek of juicy black berry fruit behind that persists quietly. I find the darkness of oak and tar in it. The palate is juiced in the clean, modern way, all tilted towards attack for now. It ends on a crunchy note, the fruit much less evident towards the finish as the oak takes control. The front of the mouth acidity is disconcerting, and signals a warning about its vinification and style. A cellar-style wine. From 2014. 2021-22 Nov 2011

2009 ()

dark, full, bright. Full, not overdone nose that is savoury and orderly; there is black fruit present that is very primary for now, but good. Free-wheeling, well knit black fruit flows along the palate. A fine style of Cornas, and a persistent wine. It ends on a firm, secure tannic couch, where there are also notes of pistachio, nut, and herbs this hot vintage. From 2013. 2023-25 Nov 2010

quite full red, also black. Nose at a raw state – hay, grilled airs, green oak. The palate is firm, towards tough, even hard. There is black fruit, but it lacks grace, never shows comfortably. Too much oak, and riper crop would have helped, too. 2016-17 Dec 2009

2006 ()

pretty dark, full robe, with a toffee top note and black fruit under it – it is nicely ripe and quite generous. There are soft black fruits on the palate, with jam in the texture, but good tannic content that is well set. Oak shows up on the finish. It does not have very deep stuffing, is a mid-distance wine, that is clamped late on by its tannins and oak. Drink esp from 2010 to allow the oak to fuse, as it should do. 13°. 2016-17 Jan 2008

smoky, brooding nose, leafy/truffled. Black fruit has vigour, persists. Very soaked wine. Tight-knit, pebbly at end, pepper too. Esp 2007-08 on. 2019-21

2002 ()

violet, black jam, pretty full nose, some Cornas minerality there. Modern, black fruit style, licorice/light pepper. Fair length. Bit constructed but OK, has some appeal, flesh. 2006-07 on. 2015-18

reserved bouquet, light meat/smoked fruit. Quite dense cooked fruit, rather spotless wine. Drier finale, some tar aftertaste. 2006 on. 2013-15
