The Wines

Syrah (early 1990s) from decomposed granite soils, crop cooled pre-fermentation, destemmed, crushed, 25 day steel vat vinification, pumping overs, aged new-1-2 year 228-litre oak casks 10 months, unfined, unfiltered, has been called Coeur de Rochevine, 65,000 b

2013 ()

(casks) dark robe, black-purple. Airs of stewed black fruits show on the nose, a blackberry liqueur style with a drift of perfume. The palate gives wavy black berry fruit with a good, relaxed style, as if this is made from old vines. It travels well along the palate, and the finish is nice and complete. It is gently aromatic on the finish, links to the granite from that. 13°. 65,000 b. From 2016. 2021-22  Jan 2015

(casks) dark robe. Oily, sleek blackberry, coulis style air, has a soaked raspberry, pronounced ripeness. The palate is supple on the attack – holds rather deep, inky black fruits, the tannins smooth, the oaking largely in step. Has juicy, mature fruit, gives freely. There is a note of tar on the aftertaste. From mid-2014 – there is no real reason to wait, except to allow the oak to absorb further. To 2018  Nov 2013

2011 ()

(casks) dark robe. The nose is wide, obvious, bears marked oaking in a tight bundle, has a grilled nature. There is a pocket of black fruit within. The oaking is fortissimo again on the palate, the oak drying the gums, leaving a charry aftertaste. This is Retro in style, the oaking too extreme. It does possess gras and some fluid matter, so the race is on – to absorb the oak, and not lose matter. From 2015. 2019-20  Nov 2012

(casks) quite a full robe; the nose beckons well, has a bright but also gentle layering of black fruit, all in order and harmony. The palate is refined, and it sinitially mild oak grows in influence over time. Black fruit lies at its heart and widens across it. A supple-fruited wine for drinking sooner than some. It makes no false steps en route, but the oak needs to infuse, and is apparent on the finish. Inside that, the balance is good. From 2013. 2018-19 Nov 2011

2 bottles tasted – both are reductive, the first dry on the finish, the second fizzy and fleeting. Light stuff. Dec 2007

black fruit, pine/smoke aroma; raspberry jam, nice length, floats along.
