Syrah (mid-1980s) from granite soils on Cuminaille, Buis, Bellay, mainly destemmed, 5-6 day pre-fermentation cooling, 4-week vinification at up to 25°C (down from 35°C until mid-2010s), 3 daily pumping overs, cap punchings, part vat emptying/refillings, racked every 3 months, with maceration at 25°C (down from 30°C until mid-2010s), aged new 228-litre oak casks 18-20 months with malo completed in the casks, unfiltered, 8,000 b

2017

(casks) dark red colour; the bouquet has sound depth, crushed black fruits such as cassis mingling with its oaking. It holds well. The palate is a sleek affair, coasts along bearing blackberry fruit that leaves a good trail of length, is nice and defined. The fruit accumulates well on the close. It’s a modern take on St Jo, all sleek and shiny. There is liberal juice to entertain, and enough of it to enable drinking with pheasant, partridge, magret de duck, duck breast. From mid-2021. 2038-40 Dec 2018, northern Rhône Previously Nov 2018 **** (casks) dark red; bacon fat, smoky and oaked nose with black cherry, ripe blueberry, a hint of vegetal, licorice. The palate presents cool red fruits with suave and fluid gras; it ends roundly, has a fresh feel, a near bracing theme. The fruit is pretty pure, nicely presented. 2016

(casks) shiny dark red. An air of oak-charcoal traverses the nose, with a crammed in black fruiting below that. It’s a very tarry start. The palate, not surprisingly, is marked by oak on the attack, but gets going, and offers a plum-fruited content with a cool, slightly vegetal close, mint on the aftertaste. This has a spare, rather New Wave make-up, is stripped back to the essentials only, and will now need time to re-find its natural local level of gras richness. From mid-2019. 2029-32 Nov 2017

2015 ()

(casks) dark red robe. Mulberry fruit with a note of baking, slightly green oak, show through on the nose. There is a sense of damp forest. The palate rests on raspberry fruit with a supple middle, and a set of toffee-like tannins, the oak playing a role in them. This has a pronounced succulence, is a squeezy style of wine, with sweetness factored into it. It is pretty long, just a little cellar exerted. 8,000 b. €16.10 export. 2014

(casks) sound red robe. The nose has an air of raspberry fruit with a curcy, inviting shape – it is clean, easy and pretty open. The palate coasts along on bright, darting red fruit; it has a touch of fruit lozenges on the finish. This is OK, but doesn’t quite convince vis-à-vis its depth. 2012 ()

(casks) shiny dark robe with a purple rim. There is a liqueur oiliness on the nose, soaked berries, blackcurrant present, sizzled bacon: the nose has young, fulsome appeal. There is a stylish swoosh of black fruit, backed by ripe tannins, the whole running along at some pace and on to a round, fluid, lightly scented finish. The ripeness of fruit and tannin is in concerto. There is an appealing, precise spot of late liqueur raspberry fruit. From late 2014. 2026-28  Nov 2013

2011 ()

(casks) quite a dark robe, purple rim. Has a sweet-noted blackberry jam or coulis air, with smoky bacon present – a traditional style, appealing. There is lift in the nose thanks to some violet. The palate possesses a little fat note that brings in a fruit pastille angle; it moves towards chocolate, teabags, has increased depth at the end. Fine dust tannins bring up the close. A wine made without artifice, gentle and ready soon. Leave until mid-2013 to refine the finish. Soinf juice in this, and floral notes on the aftertaste.  2024-26  Nov 2012

2010 ()

full red; smoked ball of aroma, stewed black berry fruit, cassis, has a grounded, latent meatiness. The palate is solid, its filling durable.The tannins wrap warmly around it, a wine that reflects the southern zone's sun and ripe features. It is broad and sustained across the late palate, delivers an ample mouthful. A note of laurel, sage, beef stock features on the aftertaste. Good, wholesome wine. 13.5°. From 2013. 2025-27. Nov 2012  Previously Feb 2012 **** (bottling next week) good, shiny dark red; sleek, vanilla, oily, black-fruited air with a smoky top note and a tiny bit of earth and animal in below. Has blackberry, supple debut, a little floral tune lies within. Gives very pretty, effortless drinking, with ripe tannins aiding that. The aftertaste is scented, while the late tannins have mineral in them, perhaps are a little stretched. Beau vin overall. From mid 2013. 2022-24 Feb 2012

2007 ()

(casks) full, bright robe; has a pretty blackberry fruit aroma, with iris flowers, prunes and ripe fruit implicit, and some smoky darkness. The black fruit on the palate is pleasing – has heart and drive , backed by peppery, minted tannins on the finish, bringing uplift there. This has plenty of promise. A small tip of oak or charcoal peeks out on the aftertaste. From mid-2010. 2020-22. To be bottled April 2009. Dec 2008

2004 ()

laden, sappy bouquet with a prune presence - is not clear-cut. Tea-prune touches on palate, texture is that of a less ripe vintage - is upright in shape and mineral, must be from the northern St Jo zone (tasted blind). Some charm in the fruit, but is edgy within. Fair length. Esp 2007 on. 2016-18. April 2006

2003 ()

(casks) smoky, upright fruit aroma, still demanding. Calm, mineral-tinted flavour of prune fruit, with good sinew. Some raspberry late on, its flavour is clear. Tannins, licorice, oak evident on aftertaste. From mid-2007. 2019-22 Nov 2004

(casks) toasted nose, some black jam fruit. Fair depth, not bad flesh, tar aspects. From 2006. 2014-16

2001 ()

suave bouquet, pepper/coffee, black fruit. Clear-cut black fruit flavour, shows tannins, then regains richness. Oak well worked here. From 2006. 2018-20
