2018 ()

dark robe; the nose is sweet-toned, offers crushed black berries with oak traces, coffee beans, a little smoky darkness. The palate is rich, pretty immediate on the attack, before it takes on dark tannins, further oaking, clusters into a tight ball on the close. Time will extend the palate and free up its potential. There is a tasty, savoury centre that carries blackberry fruit. It’s a touch workmanlike. 14.5°. 2,000 b. €43. From mid-2022. 2036-38 Nov 2019

2017

good, shiny dark robe. The nose has a spring in its step, ripe blackberry with black olives, plenty of genuine filling, trails of oak smoke. There are definite southern connotations. The palate holds blueberry fruit and a flavour of black olives [southern theme, again], with nerve through its course, the fruit polished, gleaming, enjoyable. Ripe tannins line the extended finish. This is a wine of brio, needs leaving until 2021 to absorb its oak, and will show very well in a large glass with a rib of beef. 15°. It is bottled already. 2036-38 Dec 2018

2016 ()

(casks) dark robe. Blackberry coulis, prune fruit mix on the nose, a little herbal sweetness attached. It is broad, and will emerge well. The palate is tightly wrapped, holds sleek matter with a consistent run into a dark, tarry finale. There is good, relaxed sève – old vine sap -  at its heart. The finish is oaked, quite sturdy. It’s a little flashy, but will please for its cavalier style and delivery. From mid-2019 to allow the oak to settle further in. 13.5°. 2025-27 Nov 2017

2015

(casks) shiny red robe. The bouquet is nicely full, gives oak toast with a sturdy but sleek inlay of black berry fruit, shows some licorice. It’s young and promising. The palate bears very well juiced black berry fruit with a liberal delivery, this way and that. The oak takes over towards the finish. Modern St Jo, almost a New World style with the variety on top of the terroir at present. The light crunch of the grainy tannins on the finish is the one local clue to its origins. 3,000 b. 30 hl/ha this year. From 2019. 20230-32 Oct 2016

2014 ()

(casks) dark red robe. The nose is inviting, comes with a supple black cherry air, simmered fruits, coulis in style, a note of licorice and mild oak. The palate is also soft, giving easy textured black berry fruit with a small sweet trail. This is easy access wine, which drinks harmoniously. The tannins have a light tread. 13°. 2013

full, dark robe. Has an inky, oily, nicely swell bouquet that bears a thorough inlay of black fruits, with notes of oak. There is pretty good style on the nose. The palate bears agreeable, running black fruit with a note of granite grip towards the finish. A shapely, beau vin with good richness at its heart. It makes, and leaves, a good impression. 2012 ()

(casks) rather dark; the blackberry fruit in the nose comes in ripe fashion, has a soaked style with oaking inside – this is a rather massive bouquet. The palate is big, notably soaked, holds an abundant version of Syrah, but the style is almost too glamorous; it has half an eye on the market for ripe, rather fruit bomb wines, I feel. So buy this if those are your cup of tea. From 2016. Its best period will be 2019-22. 2024-25 Nov 2013

2011

(casks, final assemblage) dark. Broad, hard to penetrate bouquet which offers good possibilities to vary. There is a fat rump of black fruit at its centre. This is meaty, earthy, full Saint-Joseph, even if it is a cellar-constructed wine for now. It spreads widely, is manly and full, needs two years, and will live into a strong second stage. It combines tea, black olives, charcoal at the end. Has a fleshy, full good length. Wine for la table. Decant this. 2023-25  Nov 2012

2010 ()

(casks, final assemblage) dark, appealing robe; Crunchy black fruited air, with a little chocolate and a leafy, wee damp woods tang, damp black soil. There is an immediate strike of generous black and prune fruit, pockets of tar and lighter, more mulberry fruit notes, before ending on oak and tea effects. The very ripe harvesting means it is textured, glossy, and the fruit squeezy. The ripe tannins leave a little chalky note in with the oak on the finish. An orderly, “there you go” wine that is ready except for its finish which needs to take in the oak. From 2013. 2022-24 Dec 2011

2009

(casks) good, full and inviting dark robe. Good quality nose, which “glistens” with potential: there is a cautious note of intense black cherry at its centre and a ripeness that introduces black olives, polished leather, is a deep-seated do. The palate is similar – a lot of thoroughly ingrained black fruit that is well-cut and crunchy. Reaches out widely, has drive and helpful oak in its path along the palate. This is classy, in a league above most Saint-Josephs. The oak will be into it by around 2014. Its richness is local, not arm`s length. Modern, very accomplished. 2021-25 Nov 2010

NOT PRODUCED: what there was *(*) in the classic wine (3 year 228-litre cask) fair depth of red in the robe; enclosed bouquet – oak, ripe fruit, raisin. Red cherry flavour, with end grip and evident oak for the present. 8-9 years. Dec 2008

2007 ()

full robe, matt tone. Has a soaked plums aroma with an overall sweet air – warm tea, rose-hip. The palate also reflects later harvested crop, so it is obviously fleshy and supple – jam on the airwaves here. There is a late dash of pepper. A supple, easy to drink wine that lacks a little cut and soul. A modern style do. 2015-16. “It was closed when in cask – the bottling has woken it up,” Jérome Coursodon. €27. Dec 2008

2006 ()

bright red; has a couch of red fruit, quite a sturdy bouquet – red cherries, damp earth and iris flowers. The palate holds likeable fruit, has substance around it, though it fades a bit towards the finish. There is a slight late rebound on the aftertaste – this is not a consecutive wine, since the attack is beau, but it is closed on the finish. From mid-2009 – will improve. “It is in a bit of an indecisive phase now,” Jérome Coursodon. 2017-18 Dec 2008 Previously Dec 2007 *** dark, rather bright robe. Extremely ripe red berry fruit aroma, so ripe that it`s a little flat. Think of dense raspberry liqueur with some tar present. The soft start to the palate has already been implied by the nose; has a tight knit roundness of shape, with mulberry or loganberry and damson fruits here. There is steady volume, and the length is decent. Ends somewhat aromatically. Can be drinking this already with game or richer foods. The current vogue for sweet ripeness is here. 2013-14 Dec 2007

2005

quite dark robe with a matt tone; scented aroma – almost as if there is Viognier in this. Its soaked fruit has a soft sweetness. Compact palate, with fleshy southern area fruit. Rather abrupt finish – isn’t integrated. Red fruits with a fungal tone – isn’t very clean on the end. Grilled tones to this, too, from oak. Try in 2007, but I have me doubts, Doctor Cameron. 2011-12 Nov 2006 Previously Dec 2005 ***(*) (2-year old cask) nutty, prune aromas, earthy and rather closed right now - Syrah reduction. Fleshy, black fruit here with a a generous feel. Fat wine, the fruit marked by ripeness. 2018-21 Dec 2005

2004 ()

sappy, some suave red fruits - gum fruit with pepper, pretty. Typical southern zone style - launches well, then dries a little. Is severe on palate with acrid areas. May have extended more on the end by mid-2007. Upright finale. Disappointing (was tasted blind) compared to previous. Previously Dec 2005 ***(*) fair red robe, not very dark. Plum fruits bouquet, some mystery, decent depth. Interesting fruit on palate, has an earthy side, weaves along well. Pretty rich core. Fruit persists, length is good. Esp early 2008 on. 2018-20 Previously March 2005 (cask) *** raspberry coulis aroma, good and harmonious. Fruit declares well on palate, holds a good core. Supple, red jam, is more open than usual. Sound length, not have the usual brio. Refined overall. 2015-16 March 2005

2003

oily, simmered black fruit bouquet, very round, lots of supple warmth. Big palate, but well-handled - a mass of black jam flavour, good tannins and grip, too. Decent length, tightens on finish. 2007 on. 2015-18

good substance, solid, tight bouquet. Tightly-packed black fruits, live texture, well done. Chunky, challenging. Licorice end, length OK. Esp 2006 on: time will be its friend. 2016-19

2000 ()

round, quite sumptuous fruit nose, meaty side too. Gently cooked fruit, rolls along nicely. Rounded, charming - quite silky, oily Syrah. Tickle of end tannin. Versatile with food. 2011-14

1998 ()

sound matter present, bosky richness combines with good tannic structure. Esp 2003 or so on. 2013-15

1994 No Rating

No rating now, Dec 2005: game, fungal stage, at its very mineral moment. Palate has heart but the surrounds are dry, quite evolved. Is tired, not showing well.

1988 ()

warm, round bouquet, quiet raspberry, sprinkling of rose, then some mineral from the dry vintage. Good mix of round, sweet flavour with tannins and a peppery minerality. Cough medicine stage, peppered finish. In good shape now. To 2012-14 on this example. Previously April 1999 ***(*) bouquet mixes cooked fruit, autumn aromas; early palate has the spongy berry fruit flavour, then air brings waxy, older notes. Dark flavours at end, nicely upright - has evolved in a very correct way. 2006-07 April 1999
