The Wines

usually a mix of Les Côtes, La Fontaine(1925 Syrah), 50-100% destemmed, 3-week fermentation, aged 20-30% new, 70-80% 1-2 year oak 24-27 months, (younger oak since 2003), filtered, can be fined, wide bottle, 3,500-4,000 b

2018 ()

(casks) handsome dark robe. The nose gives direct black fruit airs, sleek cherry fruit, notes of mulberry with them, has a slightly taut bearing. The palate lines up fresh black fruits with a little engagement from the tannins which are crisp, a touch on the stretch. This is neo-modern Cornas, an efficient style, for now rather arm’s length. The cellar policy and influence are strong, with what would appear to be a quest for tension in the wine, in the current mode. There’s a cluster of oak on the finish. It has gras, which needs to emerge. 14.5. 3,600 b. €80. From 2023. 2040-42 Nov 2019

2015 ()

(casks) deep robe, black tints at its centre. The nose is broad, oaked, has an air of deep-seated black berry fruit, a neat ripeness and sweetness in it. There is an uplifting note of iodine, sea shore. The palate holds inky, high quality fruit, blueberry and cassis spinning on lissom wheels, the tannins well in the game. The finish gives a precise clarity. This is interesting, and set to become complex if all goes well. It has very good length. 14°. 3,500 b. €30 export. From 2020. 2033-36 Oct 2016  GB/HK £370 6 b i/b Goedhuis +44(0)207 793 7900 +852 2801 5999 sales@goeduis.com hksales@goedhuis.com GB £774 12 b i/b Clarion Wines info@clarionwines.co.uk www.clarionwines.co.uk +44(0)208 747 2069.

NOT PRODUCED – WINE WENT INTO CORNAS VIEILLES VIGNES

2012 ()

dark red robe. Mulled, jam-like black fruits aroma with a touch of mint – the bouquet has a near copious manner. This is rich but restrained on the palate; the fruit and content bear a natural gras richness, and it develops a stealthy, ripe tannin. This is full wine, with old vine elegance at its heart. There are light floral notes on the end, some bite inside the coating. There is a good, aromatic presence in its concentration. Oak shows on the finish. Decanting a must. From mid-2017. 14°. 3,700 b. 2030-32 Oct 2015

NOT PRODUCED – WINE WENT INTO CORNAS VIEILLES VIGNES

2010 ()

(casks) full robe; has a ripe aroma, black berry fruit that is sweet at heart, accompanied by rosemary herb, meat stock airs, a Bovril with licorice-violet mix of aromas, some polished leather. Technically I find a little reduction and a hint of sweet Volatile Acidity. The palate launches an appealing black fruit, is tasty and easy to drink, such is its fruit-tannin harmony – indeed is a w.o.w. wine for its youth, until 2015. Lovely fruit to calm everyone down in troubled times. The style is sappy Cornas, a shade simple, but the balance is good. From 2013. 2022-24 Nov 2011

2009 ()

(casks) dark, flashy, modern robe. The nose is led by a damp aroma, and not the expected fruit surge of many 2009s; there is black fruit here with a smoky licorice siding. The palate is carefully pieced together, has a discreet fire in its belly that shows towards the finish as it gradually builds towards a glow. Has a reserved black fruit and licorice flavour. Its reserve is appealing – a wine with possibilities. The length is efficient, contains quiet tannic support. From 2013. 2023-25 Nov 2010

NOT PRODUCED – crop in Vieilles Vignes cuvée

full red – dark plum colour; the nose is more rounded than that of the Vieilles Vignes – there is a curve of mature red fruit, and a smoky, baked nature. The palate holds a textured, well set inlay of black fruits – black berries – that gain in energy and expression as they near the end. Good length. This has a good future – I can see it doing well around 2012 onwards. 2021-23. Bottled 10 days ago. Dec 2008. Expensive, though - €43 here in Cornas. Dec 2008 Previously Dec 2007 (casks) ***(*) black-tinted robe; there is an oily, sideways drift to the bouquet, and a little chocolate and raisin density derived from its oak infusion: the most prominent fruit is a hint of raspberry. The palate fruit is streamlined, and both grips and sustains rather well. The oak is present, and needs leaving for 18 months since it is just on top at the end. There is a bilberry, blueberry tone to the fruit. An outpocket of clarity and mineral comes along on the finish, as it should with Cornas. From mid-2009. 2018-19 Dec 2007

dark hue to the robe; raisin, black fruit-prune aroma that is low-key. The smell is also of Christmas cake and rum, very seasoned. The palate fruit is curly, not fresh. There is a sweet moment half-way, then oak moves on to the front rank. This is a mixed bag – it lacks freshness. Try after one year in bottle, ie late 2008 or early 2009. 100% destemmed this year. Dec 2007

2004 ()

sustained black robe. Cherry/maraschino aroma, with a modern hauteur. Quite juiced start but oak swarms over it, doesn't leave the fruit alone for long. Palate is good and gutsy, with sound core fruit within. Flourish of richness in mid-palate. Chocolate aftertaste. Can gain more local character if left, is modern style now. Esp 2008/09 on. 2017-20. April 2006

2003

(cask) full, persistent raspberry nose; bounding fruit, lots of vigour. Grilled, rich, big wine. Prune/raspberry mix. Heated end. 2009 on. To 2021-23? 3,000 b this year

2001 ()

mature red; coffee, cocoa, peppered aroma. The nose is well directed, and has some breadth of fruit under some fundamental, gummy Syrah which reflects good central zone ripening of Les Côtes. The palate carries attractive fruit, is nicely softened, the red stone fruit bearing a classy texture. It comes with a little tannin in support. It is showing well, has character, is an STGT wine from good, mature vines, their fruit serving to soften it. A little minerality emerges on the finish as it airs, where there is a suspicion of it having been taut in its youth, as if it was extracted in the cellar. Beau Vin that sings gently. 2017-19  Feb 2006 Previously ***** solid nose, dark fruit/raspberry, oily; full, broad attack, lots of fruit and content. Big, plenty. Pepper, licorice end. 2008 on. Vigour, length good. 2021-24

2000

grilled, prune/meaty aroma; quite suave cooked fruits. Pebbly, tannic end, mineral touches. Chunky, has character. 2005 on. 2013-15

1999

broad, warm nose - violets, elegant black fruit. Sustained clear black flavour, earthy touches, sinew, warm licorice end. Punchy. 2007 on. 2021-24

1998

upright, chocolatey, reserved bouquet. Powerful tannic presence with oak apparent. 2015-19

1997

violet and cassis on nose. Sweet but good, quite dense fruit. The oak rules on finish, drying it. Leave till 2004 or so. 2010-14.

1996

smoked black fruit aroma, more austere than 1997. Upright, grainy texture. Some dark chocolate at the end. Oak presence marked at 4 years. Ideal wine for gibier, game. Leave till 2004+. 2013-16.
