northern sector, oldest Syrah 1950s, 30% destemmed, 3 week vinification (from 2007 is up from 2 weeks), twice daily pumping overs, some part vat empting/refilling from 2008, aged new-15 year 600-litre oak casks 18 months, unfined, filtered, 14,000 b

2016

decent red robe; there’s a hint of reduction on the nose, which has a compact raspberry air, a note of blackberry. The palate comes with a stream of dark red berry fruit, low-key tannins. It’s a bit of throttle back wine, holds back a shade, is dumb, fair. It could be more up. It’s from the schist which has wrapped it up. Allow more time: from spring 2020. Bottled May 2018. 13°. 2032-34 Dec 2018

2011 ()

quite a full red robe. This has a very Saint-Cyr, “far north” nose – it shows graphite, is smoked, with a gentle peony flavour, black berry fruit. The palate is a touch rigid, the black cherry fruit is stretched, labours under firm tannins, finishes burnt, demanding and is tarred. The tannins are a challenge. From mid-2015. 13°. 2021-22. Bottled May 2013. Dec 2013

2010 ()

dark red. Mocha, coffee, spiced and black pepper airs, a small spot of cassis fruit shows at its centre. The palate has the decisive mineral cut of its place; its fruit extends carefully, the tannins crisp and firm for now. This has 2010’s more complete qualities than the 2011. Its exit is steely now. It does reflect its place, has enough content for its tannins. From late 2015. 13°. 2027-28  Dec 2013

2009 ()

three-quarter red colour. Smoky bacon, towards pine, bosky airs. The palate has the sunny, tight, tannic nature of the year, and a plum red fruit emerges, albeit with a close clamp of tannin. Will it ease and open, flourish?? It lacks true freedom late on, is a bit dry. From late 2015. 13°. 2024-25  Dec 2013

2007

quite full red, some black traces. Soaked, mulberry fruits nose that is suave, fat. The palate also has a jam, then smoky line of fruit. Tar and tannin towards the finish. Leave until spring 2011. 2017-18 Dec 2009

2006 ()

level red robe; has a pine-resin aroma, with raspberry and brambly fruit within. Red fruits come out directly on the palate – this is quite a stern, lead-pencil Côte-Rôtie. It ends on a stalky, licorice note. There is mineral tension in this, a wine that can gain as it ages. From mid-late 2009. “It has been closed all along,” Gisèle Vernay. 2016-17 Dec 2008

2005

the red is still full at its core; pine and resin again on the nose – with a tight little bundle of red fruits, even wild strawberry. Crisp start to the palate, its fruit well wrapped by some live tannins – this has life in it. It runs directly, has the potential to round out, from late 2009 or so –it is taking its time. Chewy, mineral aftertaste, licorice and smoke there. 2018-20 Dec 2008 Previously Dec 2007 *** pretty, black-tinted robe; the nose is mild, and subdued today, but can certainly emerge to be elegant, with red berries prominent. The palate shape is a little upright. This comes with a light touch – its fruit runs with some northern sector freshness, and there is a touch of late iron in the finish. A quietly crafted, respectable, sound wine. Its length is OK. Timing is important to choose its best moment - I would suggest late 2008 on. 2017-18 Dec 2007 Previously *** (casks) quite a full red; sweet fruit nose, some mint and reduction apparent of cooked red berries, raspberries. The attack is savoury, with live, ripe tannins – comes in a pleasing, flattering style – “come all ye faithful” wine. Broad at end, without excess, has a different shape to their normal wines, maybe have left the fruit to ripen longer. Esp 2008 on. 2012-14 Nov 2006

2004 ()

pretty, aromatic, deep and persistent black fruit aroma - tarry and fresh, has the nerve of the north. Clean, attractive fruit with earthy appeal and raspberry aftertaste. Runs in a straight line, fruit is well cut, but no real extras beyond it. Sound to drink fairly soon, plain wine without inspiration. 2012-13 April 2006

2003 ()

generally clear bouquet, with a little floral topnote, and a leaning towards gaminess. Raspberry flavour, with a quite soft, pliant texture. Gentle, fine style of C.R. - more for drinking early. 2012-13 Dec 2005 Previously **(*) brewed, prolonged coffee/cocoa/mocha aroma. Restrained weight, fruit on palate is brewed, tannins have some bite, though are ripe. Sound, in the mid-bracket of Rôties. 2007 on. 2014-15

2002 ()

quite steely, advancing nose with fundamental, earthy aspects. Scented red jam on palate, shape is rather thin. Drink by 2008. Previously March 2005 * fruit gum, reductive bouquet, some breadth. Fruit on palate quite clear, but wine is limited. Acidity evident. Some length. Has always suggested it was hard work to achieve even this. Esp 2006-09. Previously * some red fruit aroma; light wine, elements are disorderly as yet. Suggests hard work was needed to achieve even this. Early wine.

2001 ()

quite ripe fruit aroma - violets, floats out. Light style wine, with quite a vibrant interior. Showing well, restrained appeal. Length OK. A wine of no real highs, though. 2011-13 March 2005 Previously May 2004 **(*) fair red robe; some cooked black fruit, earthy touches. Quite classic. True style, gentle wine, some spice. Decent cut. From 2006 so can round itself. Has gained with ageing. 2012-14 May 2004 Previously ** floral, light black fruit, supple bouquet; soft wine, quite easy; some spice and tar. From 2005 so can round out. 2010-12

2000

cooked, soft black fruit aroma, grows; pretty berry fruit with some kick, runs on correctly. Some end tannin, dry towards the finale. 2005 on. 2010-12

1999

nice depth on bouquet; clear stewed fruit, damson/chocolate. Quite solid, earthy too. From 2005-06. 2011-13
