The Wines

100% Syrah (late 1980s) from sandy granite soils, hand harvested, pre-fermentation crop cooling, 3-4 week steel vat vinification, pumping overs, malo done in cask, raised 70% new, 30% 1-year 228-litre oak casks 24 months

(cask) full red robe; the nose is chunky, not giving a lot just now. There is a ripe, “high” red-fruit, mulberry style inlay, and a note of grilling and blood. The palate is firm, bears sealed content with upright tannins present, also closed in nature. The fruit is less polished than some this year. It needs time to be prised open, but its texture avoids any excess fat in this very sunny vintage, which is a virtue. Its juice is concentrated, the length sure, a note of iron on the aftertaste. From 2023, decanting necessary. 2041-43 Nov 2019

2017 ()

(casks) dark robe; the nose gives stewed fruits, raspberry and blackberry together, is tinged with sweetness, comes with restraint, a hint of oak. The palate starts carefully, gains a little momentum, runs with savoury, perfumed matter, raspberry prominent. The finish is nicely juicy, encouraging for its future and its appeal, the aftertaste on some of its oak. It doesn’t ignite, but is agreeable, a country wine, no pretension. 100% Syrah. From 2021. 2036-38 Dec 2018
