The Wines

Grenache (mid-1970s), Syrah (mid-1980s), Mourvèdre (late 1970s) from stony red clay terraces, destemmed, 3-4 week vinification at up to 28°C, pumping overs, aged 90% vat, 10% 1-2 year oak casks 9-12 months, unfined, filtered

2015 ()

dark red robe. The nose is a smoky tangle of hedgerow berries and raspberry with a light sweetness that is appealing. The palate cones and goes rather rapidly, which is surprising given the nose. There is a brief moment of red fruits with some plant tannins. It’s very mainstream, and a disappointment given the calibre of the vintage. There is a little fine powdery tannin on the close. 2020-21 March 2017

2013 ()

(vat) purple hue. Dark cherry and kirsch aroma on the nose. This is reiterated on the palate, which is sweetly fruited but firm and long on the finish. Decent medium-bodied weight here. Solid and structured wine. 13.5°. From spring 2016. 2024-25 JL Dec 2014

2012 ()

(vat/casks) big, dark robe; Broad, cooked up, sweet prune, North African dates aroma, has weight but isn’t well defined. The palate fruit is clear, holds some gras and extends in largely smooth fashion to the line. A little dusty tannin nudges in. This could have more depth and drive, is workmanlike -  a fair do, not more. 13.5°. €14.25 at cellars.  2019-20  Dec 2013
