30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, 20% Cinsault from about 40 hectares of rolled stones clay-limestone soils at Coudoulet, gravel, small stone soils at Prébois, destemmed, flash heated to 30°C, then back to 20°C, 12-14 day vinification, varieties kept apart until after the malolactic fermentation, aged large barrel 6-8 months, fined, unfiltered

2018

(barrels) dark, full red; the bouquet has a sweet-toned nature, offers cassis de Dijon Bourdier, fruit liqueur, with a note of raspberry, is all on its fruit for now, has a note of licorice from the Mourvèdre. The palate bears cool, good flow fruit, picks up enjoyable tannins that add a layer to the closing stages.  This has a nourishing quality that is most appealing, and will be open for drinking early, via the open fruit of the 2018 vintage. 2017 ()

very dark red; the bouquet is cautious, has a restrained air of sweet cassis fruit, low-key grilling, dampness. The palate has a sensuous quality, bears enjoyable richness with a well judged savoury appeal. It’s rounded on the finish, well orchestrated and classy. This will be very popular, is graceful and stylish. It’s highly appealing now! 2031-33 Oct 2019 Previously Oct 2018 ****(*) (barrels) inky, intense, dark robe. The bouquet has style, black olives, black cherry and berry fruit in harmony, a hint of sweet herbs and dusty lands. The palate is never hurried, flows with grace, offering neat portions of black fruits left and right. The tannins have a savoury quality, and enhance the finish with their extra depth and dimension. Coudoulet is on a hot run at present! This has better balance and tuning than many 2017 Châteauneuf reds. It is strongly marked by the good presence of its Mourvèdre along the silky but firm second half. From spring 2020. 2030-32 Oct 2018

2016 ()

(mixed barrels) bright, dark red robe. Has a really upbeat, forward nose that bounds out with blackberry, pure fruit, prune indicating its ripeness. There is a jelly-like quality, and a low-key dusty trail presence. The palate offers gourmand, tasty black berry fruits with attractive tannins adding depth and dimension. This is full of beans, up there as a leading Côtes du Rhône 2016, with panache, and good, extended length. There are notes of licorice – Mourvèdre – on the finish. 2015

1) (Grenache, 30%, 64 hl barrel) ***(*) dark red; the bouquet has a rich interior, shows prune fruit, honey. The palate also runs on good, sustained richness, plum fruits; it is plump and refined in its gras. The tannins give a little darkness, bite. This is southern wine, indeed. “It is gourmand, you could drink it on its own,” César Perrin. 15 years 2) (Syrah, 30% 64 hl barrel) **** dark red; tight, well-filled nose, shows a little red meat. The palate holds bright fruit, comes with a good surge, has vivacity. This will go very well with the Grenache. There is good dance in its red fruit. Tasty wine. 16 years. 3) (Mourvèdre, 30% 51 hl barrel) **** very dark; beefy, oxtail, assured depth in the nose, small dark fruits. This is packed with potential, gives a real, serious couch and base for the wine, holds good, prolonged freshness. It is salted late on, has both brio and a serious nature, is long. 18 years. OVERALL **** all these are very orderly and will play their respective roles well. 2014 ()

dark robe, red with black. The nose is immediately spiced, carries an underlay of supple, coulis style blackberry fruit, all awash nicely. There are streaks of licorice. The palate presents an engaging, fluid run of black cherry fruit with further licorice, and dark notes of cocoa, mocha. It has a fresh, suave length. It’s good for early drinking, with the momentum of youth. The tarry late stage will refine over the next two to three years. 14°. 2025-26 Sept 2016

2013

pretty full red robe. Has a smoky, dark red berry, briary, dried herbs aroma, liqueur of cassis de Dijon at its heart. It is a pretty big start. The palate is immediately expressive, full of running, bears spiced fruits with a tarry, insistent intensity on the finish. Licorice and a line of freshness keep it on the move. It has the body to handle its pepperiness. Can be drunk in its youth with a good steak, for example. The finish will be more refined and less dusty from spring 2017. 2026-28  Oct 2015 Previously Feb 2015 ***(*) (barrel) shiny, quite dark red robe. The nose is restrained, offers black berry fruit with a compote note about it, it has style and airborne qualities and a little fresh glint in it. The palate delivers peppery, direct fruit on the attack, followed by a small note of gras richness and a secure length. It ends with stylish fruit and a nibble of fine tannin. From mid-2017. 2026-28  Feb 2015 Previously Nov 2014 *** attractive, quite red colour. There is a hum of power inside a cherry stone fruit aroma which is direct and primary, not varied, comes with a murmur of herbs of Provence. The palate has a flavour of kirsch, red fruit with cut in its texture, the tannins live. This is a Spinal Tap wine – clean-cut, and not solar at all, as if constructed by wind. Allow time for it to gain 1) more weight and depth and 2) cohesion. So wait until mid-late 2017. 2012

just bottled: bright, quite dark red robe. The nose is open, gives agreeable ripple of black berries, a smoky cassis blackcurrant core, blueberry, has a pretty fresh context. Still very primary, will vary, has charm. The palate swings along well, the style free and the fruit fluid, polished. It goes for elegance and ease over depth and questions. It picks up a grainy texture and garrigue seasoning that keep you on your toes at the end, which is tasty, lingers well. In short trousers now – drink from spring 2015. The finish is very good – stylish and persistent – and the drinkability high. 2024-25  Oct 2013

2011

dark red, purple. Licorice seasoning, Mourvèdre notes on the first nose, has 2011 weight, a slight sense of cloy, liqueur, game, plus blackberry airs. It is easy to taste and like now, centred on easy, scented richness, a smooth and slightly sweet combo. Round tannins at the end fit in. Quite a plush wine, whose length is grainy, a little Spartan. It presents the 2011 issue of alcohol and not full integration and order. Decant this. From 2015, say. One of the less convincing recent Coudoulet reds. 2020-21  Oct 2013 Previously ***(*) (casks, bottling March 2013) dark red. Has a supple aroma, marked by blackberry coulis with sweet and soft notes. It displays an agile density, has an earthy grounding below. The palate is juicy, textured to please – there is blackberry with smoky notes which keeps going well and attractively. The tannins are live, active and lift it on the final moments. Grenache and Syrah lead its flavour, providing a mix of raspberry and blackberry fruit. Modern, sleek, rather aromatic wine. Drink later rather than earlier to enjoy a less obvious, more nuanced wine – from 2015; then there will be more smoky corners and less fruit jelly. 2022-24  Oct 2012

2010 ()

dark red, some dark black within. Wide, agreeably brimming bouquet that holds a deep set of black fruit and mulberry, with prune and notably licorice, a bit of liqueur fruit in its air. The attack is rich, textured, but fine throughout. Has a juicy generosity, with a mobile flow, width as well. Shows the scent of rosemary and sage in it, the garrigue. It reaches its destination, where there are grainy, slightly pitchy tannins. It will really please drinkers, lots of pleasure to be in the glass from its very full red fruits flavour which combines local feel through the herbs. The aftertaste is juiced, shows raspberry before a smoky exit. From late 2013. 2025-26 Nov 2011

2009

complete, dark red; the bouquet is wide – in the style of 2009, comes with some brioche-toffee baking, is very young, and even shows liquid honey with its raspberry fruit. Refined debut to the palate, which is just in transition now, and settling down. The fruit resembles little red berries (suitable for 2009 and its heat), the tannins are well embedded and lend sustained support while integrating well. Has a salty length. Is getting it together, becoming cohesive. Has a wide, gummy finale. Good, true wine. From spring 2013. 2024-26 Nov 2011 Previously March 2011 *** (pre-bottling) healthy red robe. More red fruit, red jelly aroma than terroir for now – the vintage on top, is very curvaceous. The palate is clean, with spruced red cherry fruit, has a modern sleek texture, a core of streamlined fruit. Its tannins are not especially evident. I find it more homogenised than in the old days – wanting to be fine and orderly, as it were. Its ingrained tannins need two years to blend in, soften. 2021-23 March 2011

2008 ()

half the usual crop this year, so just 60,000 b – this bottled 1 month ago. Steady red robe; red jam and berry aroma, fair depth, also smoky pepper, chalk style cut. Attractive red fruits debut before it tightens and narrows, becomes nutty. A bit angular now, with a pine-resin note at the end – bite there. The finish shows moments of fruit, so there it can make it. From late 2011. 2020-21 June 2010

2007

bright, pronounced red with a purple , crimson thrust. Dense, nearly oily aroma of great plenitude – here we go, this is ample. Mulberry fruit in the air, ripeness that is backed by lurking licorice tannin, a Mourvèdre influence, and lingering black cherry. Elegant debut to the palate, with a fine quality about the steady thread of fruit at its backbone. Has a serious structure, a wine of long life here. Dark tannins ride alongside, and there is a bracing, clear freshness on the finale. Exceptional for a Côtes du Rhône, Château de Fonsalette apart. Air brings out more red fruit and Grenache markings, but the tannin influence of the other grapes persists. Great garrigue here – mixed spice, fennel, licorice seasoning. Has the definite Mourvèdre influence of Beaucastel itself. Very long finale. Playing a waiting game, but gives virile, provocative drinking now. Even though it seems expensive, is worth every penny. 14.5°. 2021-24 March 2010 Previously Nov 2008 **** (assembled, due for bottling early 2009, in 2 months` time) dark robe, black mixed with red. The bouquet is a real runner – it rocks out, parading blackberry laced with a dark soil earthiness, is handsome, and shows definite ripeness, dried herbs such as thyme also. The palate holds sweet tooth blackberry fruit, followed by olive and blackberry liqueur. Has rich, ripe ending, some French Zan licorice and lavender at the finish. Ample, beau vin of definite and guaranteed quality. Its lovely juice is a feast. From late 2009. 2021-23 Nov 2008

2006

(example, to be bottled mid-2008) bright, black cherry robe; the nose is sweet, bordering on sweaty, comes very much in the mulled red fruits, hang dog style. Bountiful, ripe and rich wine that carries red fruits of a corpulent nature: they are easy and savoury, with a burst of late raspberry intensity. Pliant, quite rich drinking with more power than it lets on. 2015-17 Nov 2007

2005

this is flying along at ten years’ old; the robe has a little shift away from dark red, but the nose is full-on garrigue, herbs, laurel and plum fruited. The palate is broad, long, the matter still well packed together. There is a savoury note to it, and it is excellent with a leg of lamb. This is superior, STGT Côtes du Rhône, a real winner. Can live on well. 2023-25 June 2015 Previously Nov 2007 **** quite a dark red robe, with some black in it. Biscuity, red fruits and black raisin nose that is broad and very well layered. There is plenty of shape in it, so lots of potential. The early fruit is rich, good and clean, with energy and appeal: red berries persist and dance around the palate. Its length is good and complete. A Go-Go wine with accomplished fruit, and now great to drink in its primary vigour. The best Coudoulet for a while, one that welcomes all comers. w.o.w. wine. 2016-18 Nov 2007 Previously Dec 2006 (pre-bottle) ***(*) sustained, black cherry robe. Primary stage bouquet, with olives and black berries. Succulent start to palate, with black jam that is round and a little sugared as it proceeds. Fleshy and full, but also defined. Has good length. The tannins are quite firm from half way, so leave until 2009. Persistent wine with a good construction. 2018-20 Dec 2006 Previously Nov 2006 ***(*) (pre-bottle) full red; has a primary red fruits aroma, with good energy. The palate fruit is thorough and smooth, the tannins ripe. Stylish, rounded wine in the making, has a late meaty touch. Suggests a good evolution, and a muscular wine, more than many Coudoulets of recent years. From mid-2008, 2009 on. 2017-19 Nov 2006, London

2004

meaty, slightly reduced nose with red berries and baked stones behind the aroma. There is quite a round start to the palate, then a little late mineral tightening. A consistent mineral thread through it gives it a fresh tone. Not especially full or fat, has the glint of the gunslinger in its eye: “I mean business.” From 2008. 2016-19 Dec 2006 Previously March 2005 an assembled example *** pretty solid bouquet - will be full and I suspect meaty, also. Broad, rounded palate with fleshy appeal, tannins show well and will allow it to live well. More balanced than 2003. Esp 2008 on. 2015-17. March 2005

2003 ()

soft red robe, still rather deep at eight years old. Bacon – wow! - on the nose, honey with it, and the baked stone-pebble aspect of 2003 – lavender, fennel here. The plum fruit of the Grenache is at the front end of the fruit aroma. Softening red fruits lead the palate, that has lots of garrigue-herbal expression. Warm, but not overdone in any way – this is fine, but also has a “dark” trail which I like. Within there are coffee, dark chocolate notes sprinkled without excess weight. A good surprise for its elegance. It ends on a slightly baked note, but is absolutely OK with food, so no worries on that score. Kid, young goat, or pork would do well with this. 13.5°. To 2016-17 Maldives, May 2011 Previously March 2005 *** prune, notably plum aroma, floral presence, ripe from its low acidity. Assertive cooked/baked black fruits flavour, good length, where shows some tannin, licorice. Rigorous on the finish from the vintage. Berry fruit here, is big and broad wine, within reason, too. 1994

sound red robe; the nose is led by pepper, with spices in the background, seems to be locked into that rather than fruit from the vintage – there is a firm, rather square shape to the bouquet. The palate is firm, too, upright, its texture solid. Prickly dark fruits and sleek licorice mingle on the finish, where there is a chewy note and fairly dry tannins. Not a long-lived wine, also a bit fragile from a vintage where ripening was not straightforward. 2003-05  Oct 1996
