2019 ()

(vat/barrel/casks) dark robe; oak and its varnish shimmies across the bouquet, with a firm inlay of black fruits, a hint of baking from the hot summer sun.  It’s a broad, almost insistent start, with plenty to emerge over time. The palate issues suave dark plum content with oak alongside, develops a second spur of length into a resounding, filled close, the inner strength detectable there. It’s a modern take on Châteauneuf with its oaking, so I would leave it for considerable time to allow local ID to come through more. It has plenty of depth, heart, will evolve well. From 2025-26. 2046-48 Nov 2020

(concrete vat/new/used casks, bottling late 2020) dark robe; the nose is thorough, still raw, carries an aroma of beef stock, is on the brewed side, is a winter warmer, has some damp notes. The palate is muscled, intense, with a firm layering, barely a chink of light for now. It carries stout red cherry fruit content, completes its course solidly, ends in a compact, knit fashion, the length very secure. 14.5°. 48% Gren, 42% Syr, 10% Mourv. €50. From 2023. 2044-46 Oct 2019

quite a dark red; the bouquet serves an air of red fruit gums, has sweet, lingering airs, raspberry and red cherry. The palate is also based on red fruits, raspberry, with succulence, and a set of still compact tannins. The fruit has some brightness, extends with a line of spearmint, vintage cut. The length is good. 14.5°. From 2022, with a slight softening of tannin on the agenda. 2040-42 Dec 2019 Previously March 2019 ****(*) plum red robe. The bouquet is curvaceous, gives raspberry fruit that glistens, has a stylish appeal, strawberry fruit also, good Châteauneuf virtues of elegance and serene quality, a touch of smoke and damson plum. The palate offers also a very stylish red-fruited content, a good, ripe layering of tannin right in the wheel. The finish steps up on the innate power, but is well integrated, and there’s a savoury presence. This is careful Châteauneuf with a texture that satisfies. There’s knuckle, graininess on the finish that keeps it in check nicely.  From 2023-24 – once unlocked, it will show very well. 14.5°. 2043-45 March 2019
