The Wines

100% Grenache from red sandy, some red clay soils north of the Château on Vaudieu, destemmed, 35 day concrete vat vinification at 25°C, cap punching, part vat emptying/refilling, aged 600-litre oak casks 18 months, unfiltered, heavy bottle, 1,600-4,000 b

2017

(casks, bottling May 2019) sturdy red robe. The nose is brewed up, on brambly berry fruit with bosky notes, briar, and pine, cedar from its oaking. The palate bears mixed red fruit flavours with some still angular tannins; the finish is on raspberry with a small wave of juicy delivery. This needs to come together, doesn’t seek to over-impress, thankfully. Its juicing is a definite attribute. There’s a gummy note on the aftertaste that needs resolving. 14.5°. 4,000 b. 100% Grenache. €75. From 2022. 2039-41 Oct 2018

2016

(casks, bottling May 2018) dark red colour. The bouquet is deep, with a beef, black olive paste aroma, dark berry fruits closely packed inside. The palate holds restrained content, a good Grenache heart with style, and precision in its delivery. There is some conflict with its oak late on, a more caramel influence from that, rather than the essence of variety and vineyard. It has pretty good balance, and can be a serene and stylish wine if left until 2024-25. 15.5°. 4,000 b. €75, not cheap. 2039-42 Oct 2017

2015 ()

(casks) red robe. Plum and raspberry bounce out of the bouquet with a geranium, peony floral hover and light, dusty spicing. The palate bears loose, spiced, slightly floral content, travels pretty freely. It has a little coolness and tightness, and needs to expand over time. There is a flash of fresh juice towards the finish, which is encouraging, before the rocky tannins take over. Decanting a good idea. 15°. From 2020. 2036-38 Sept 2016

2014

(casks, bottling May 2016) dark red robe. Has a sultry style of bouquet, with perfume and spice mixed with black cherry, coulis style fruit. The palate holds engaging dark fruit, with clean tannins adding emphasis towards the finish. It is cool and well presented, and will offer bonny, open drinking from 2019. The tannins are ripe and live, and add quality. 14.5°. 2029-31  Oct 2015
