70-80% Mourvèdre (1952-1982) mainly from sandy soils on Colombis (W) & Pignan (N-E), 10-15% Grenache, 5-8% Syrah, 5-12% Cinsault, Muscardin, Clairette, Counoise, Vaccarèse, Picpoul, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Picardan, Terret Noir, 22-30 day tronconic oak vat vinification, pumping overs, cap punching, part vat emptying/refilling, aged 7% new 228-litre oak casks, 93% tronconic oak vat 24-30 months (since early 2010s up from 12-16 months), unfined, filtered, first wine 2003, called Domaine Mathieu Vin di Felibre d’Anseùme Mathieu de Castèll-Nòu-Dóu-Papo until 2015, when became André Mathieu Vin di Felibre, 2,500-4,000 b

2016 ()

(barrel/casks, bottling May 2019) dark red, intense robe. The bouquet is a good, secure offering with deep lying black fruits, thick coulis in style, reminds me of loganberries above all. There are notes of black pepper, spice from the Mourvèdre. The palate is stylish, well-filled, runs with good content and smoky, salted tannins that aid its gusto and length. It finishes with clear, considered grip. This is a good, deep-seated Châteauneuf, with the Mourvèdre (80%) lending it a firm, controlled presence. 80% Mourv, 10% Gren, 5% Syr, 5% various. 15°. 2,500 b. €39. From 2021. 2036-39 Oct 2017

2015

(casks) dark red. The nose has a trim air of black berry fruit, quiet style. The palate bears neat berry fruits, with a good ease in their delivery. The tannins fit in well, aren’t overdone at all. A spherical glass of wine in the making. Enjoyable, and pretty true Châteauneuf. 14.5°. From mid-2018. 2027-29 Sept 2016

2012 ()

(casks, bottling June 2015) dark red, good looking robe. The bouquet is broad, solid, lines up an ample black berry fruit, prune, with a smoky top air, has dimension, and will open and vary well. The palate is also restrained now,  but has good heart, likeable richness, presents a thorough stamp of dark berry, a date flavour and consistent fullness to the end. Very sound quality – this will evolve very well, no surprises, its balance being good. From late 2016. 14.5°. 3,000 b, 80% Mourv, 10% Gren, 5% Syr, 5% 2029-31 Nov 2013

2010 ()

(casks) dark robe; enjoyable black fruit such as black cherry runs across the nose in a shapely bouquet that also delivers smoke, bosky woods and licorice airs, a sense of crème de menthe. The fruit continues along the palate, with fine, nutty tannins within. It lengthens well, without forced. A nice and cool wine, well balanced and agreeable to drink. It will evolve consistently. There are tarry late moments. It is now a touch tight and taut on the palate, so leave until 2014. It will be good and clear in time. €35 at the domaine. 2026-28 Dec 2011

2009

(casks) dark robe; the bouquet is willing up, is deep and not yet fully out and about, shows traces of oak. Has a chiselled oak debut to the palate – the black fruit has its oak closely attached for now. It moves through OK to the finish, can get it together. It is quite direct in the later stages, but ends without any dry notes there. Good width. Interesting potential. From 2015. 2027-30 Oct 2010

2007

(casks) dark red robe; has a damp forest, black fruits such as black cherry, aroma that is wide, and comes with a sprinkle of pine, almost resin. The palate is oaked, has a black fruit core and is full – it is certainly rich and smoothly textured, before the oak emerges and runs down either side of it. A polished, full wine. I would like a shade less oak so I could drink it younger. From late 2012. 2024-26 Nov 2008

2006

full red robe; restrained, red fruits nose with herbal notes, rosemary and laurel and marks of pepper. Has a true, local and thorough air. Nicely rich palate, the richness well-founded. Carries an elegant, savoury red fruit flavour, with the pepperiness of old vine Grenache late on. Nice, relaxed winemaking, that lets the vineyard do the talking. The red fruits have nice life late on, and run on well. Has a good, herbal finale. STGT wine, its balance is good. From 2009-10. Raised 12 months as usual. 2023-25 Nov 2007

2005 ()

bright black plum robe; mulled red fruits with violet in the main aroma – has a sweet, jam, caramel air, is young and wholesome, with a clean cut to it – the Mourvèdre clarity. Spiced, ample red fruits start the palate – they have plenty of rich poise and persist well. A little oaking on the finish is not intrusive. So clear is the fruit that this can be drunk now, but for more variety and nuance and a more rounded finish, revert from spring 2010. Very good balance and length, a wine with a long life ahead. 14°. 2023-25 June 2008 Previously Nov 2007 **** full, proper deep red. The bouquet red fruit has a meaty air, a square shape, and comes with some mulled notes, a sweet simmering. Tight-knit, intense dark fruit with a marked pepper flourish late on. This is firm overall, but its heart is rich, and shows that just before the finish. Naturally, this is not typical Châteauneuf-du-Pape – Bandol with more sweetness and roundness. From 2009. 2023-25. Raised longer – 16 months – this year. “It is now more open than it was in spring 2007, and its top moment may come after 8 to 10 years,” A.Mathieu. Nov 2007 Previously Nov 2006 **** bright, quite dark red; oaked, smoked nose – sleek modern red fruit within, the underlay is dense. Rich core to palate, not overstated, holds a fresh finish. Oak all over the place, leave this at least till 2011 to get it to better absorb. Very hard to appreciate and judge with all this wood. 2023-26 Nov 2006

2004 ()

pretty dark robe; plenty in the bouquet, even if it is rather stiff now – baked cherries and kirsch, comes in a brewed up style. Robust black fruits with tar at the end from its oak. Nicely decisive texture, with a licorice aftertaste. Modern style of wine, probably expensive. More together by 2008-09. 2019-21 Oct 2006
