2016

(casks, bottling Jan 2018) very dark colour, black-purple. The bouquet has a thick quality, a surge of red and black berry fruit presented, with toffee notes from the oak. It has broad shoulders. The palate is tightly drawn together, not expressive yet, and the second half is ruled by its firm oaking and tannins. The flavour rests on prune, cooked plums, spice, licorice. There is freshness on the compact, dark finish, so time is the agent now required to step forward: drink from 2022. This has changed its make-up, the Grenache and Mourvèdre switching lead roles: 65% Mourv, 20% Syr, 15% Grenache. 14.5°. 1,000 b. €45. 2036-39 Oct 2017

2015

(vat/casks) bright dark red colour. The nose is big, leads on blackcurrant fruit with a ripeness that veers towards liqueur. It has an easy roundness. The palate gives a savoury content, harmonious and well-juiced, dark black fruits with a little swagger about them. This is genuine Châteauneuf, with a pocket of dark, crisp tannin on the close and a late note of chocolate. It surges as it ends. 80% Mourv, 20% Gren. 14.5°. From mid-2019. 2032-34 Sept 2016

(vat/casks) 1st sample:  dark, full robe. The nose is charged, gives a pool of plum, soaked fruits, but also has a baked, Brett angle. The palate’s dark fruit is overtaken by a roll of drying tannins. 2nd sample: bold front air of prune, closely packed black berry, oak and tar, pine present, a bouquet of meaty depth. The palate has a pesky dryness after half way once more. Has a grunt factor, a solid nature, but lacks grace and carry. Retaste post bottling. Nov 2013

(vat/casks) full robe; wide bouquet that involves meat, grilled, cocoa airs. Good, confident start to the palate, which bears attractive fruit, a cherry flavour: it keeps that generosity until oak and tar come along in the final stages. Chewy finish. this has become supple, the oak settling in. The red stone fruit runs smoothly, the style agreeable. It reveals charcoal and chocolate on the finish – the cask influence there. “It is still a bit closed,” Claude Chastan. 2020-22 Dec 2011

2005

full, dark robe; concentrated nose – it is oily, and quite charged with live black pepper airs, smoke and tar, essential elements. The palate is big, gets off to a wide, full shouldered start. Almost a wine of yore, of our ancestors. Very filled, old vines production with a seamless texture – a big wall of Châteauneuf bulking up the glass. There is black fruit within, but this is more about power than finesse – step aside, ask no questions wine. Big beef dishes, venison required. There is oak on the finish. From 2010. 2022-24 June 2008
