The Wines

55-85% Grenache (1973), 15-45% Syrah from galet stone covered clay-siliceous-limestone soils at Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne, destemmed, 2-4 week vinification, 1-2 daily pumping overs, 3-5 part vat emptying/refillings, Grenache steel vat raised, Syrah raised 1-5 year 600-litre oak casks 10-12 months, filtered, “drink with lamb chops on the grills, pork ribs in caramel, rib of beef”, 13,500-35,000 b


(vat/casks) full, dark red robe. The nose is well and fully assembled around black fruits with an inner insistence, no skimping on the fruit and its depth: black cherry with a hint of violet, flowers from the Syrah, some nuttiness, crushed nut shells. The palate is also full and persistent, bears coated matter, initially suave tannins well inset – they develop a chalky angle, with a bold saltiness, on the finish. This is a table wine due its implicit strength. The fruit has a tasty, clear point to it. It’s a sizeable Côtes du Rhône, one with connections to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. There is a lot of wine in the glass for a “mere” Côtes. 15°. 80% Gren, 20% Syr. 2022-23 Aug 2017

2015 ()

(vat/casks) dark plum red robe. The nose is full of raspberry fruit with some sweetness to increase its immediate appeal. There is a soaked quality to the fruit, lots of Grenache on parade. The palate is enjoyable, thanks to its spice, white pepper thread along the wavy, tasty raspberry fruit – the pepper keeps it on its toes. The red fruit peeps out nicely on the aftertaste. Authentic, good character and cool Côtes, drink with grills and barbecues, also stews. 15°. 60% Gren, 40% Syr. 13,500 b. From 2017. 2021-22 June 2016


(vat/barrel) shiny red robe. The nose still has a sense of lees present, the red fruit aroma lively enough. There are pockets of smoke, ash, mineral. The fruit is tasty, oh yes; this is a treat to drink, is stylish and its tannins are refined. Has life, spark in its veins, is very well done, STGT wine. 2010 ()

rather dark robe; sturdy, reserved, nutty-raisin-grain air, has mild black fruiting. Blackberry and raspberry fruit debut with a juicy feel on the palate; this is a simple drinker. It stops a little, takes on a salty, bosky feature there, shows grip, dryness. 2014-15 Feb 2012

2009 ()

even red robe; red fruit liqueur aroma, a good smattering of herbs, also some licorice/fennel freshness. The palate is tasty, runs right across the palate, has a real juicy centre, delivers its fruit well for pleasure, but also has tannin and matter to support it. Good now, on its vigour. Must have food. Has lots of pulp of the Grenache in it. 15°. 2015-16 Oct 2010
