The Wines

95-100% Grenache, 0-5% Syrah from Charbonnières (N-E), mostly destemmed, 3-5 week concrete vat vinification, pumping overs, part vat emptying/refilling, aged 80% new 228-litre oak casks, 20% 600-litre oak casks 14 months (before mid-2010s aged concrete vat, 228-litre, 550-litre casks 14 months), first wine 2000, “more modern style”, 4,000 b

2016

(casks, bottling April 2018) full red robe. Smoky, soaked cherries aroma, coulis of raspberry and basil present, oak tar in the background. The palate is more marked by the oak charcoal of the oak, holds good stylish richness inside the oak. It ends on a flavour of cooked plums. The assertive oak demands it be left until 2022. It can then regain some typicity over its current cellar influence. 16°. 4,000 b. 100% Gren. 2035-38 Oct 2017

2015 ()

(casks, bottling April 2017) dark, brooding robe. There is a chocolate-oak inkiness on the nose, which therefore conforms to the classic Prestige wine formula. A date and black fruit jam aroma lurks within, not yet unfurled. The palate starts with oak right there, bears fleshy content with peppery inclusions. Blueberry fruit lies at its centre. The aftertaste brings licorice, some still stiff tannins and the oak. The content beyond the oak has fleshy depth. It’s high octane wine, be warned, sip it slowly. 16°. 4,000 b. Allow until 2020. 2032-34 Sept 2016

2010

(casks) dark, a bit inky in colour. Has a sturdy, wide-shouldered bouquet – blackberry-licorice, smoke, toffee-honey, raspberry, with oak traces: this is a solid start. The palate bears muscled, deeply set black fruit and bilberry fruit with a juicy heart. A touch of late heat or power breathes through its full content. There is a good gain in flavour as it goes along, plenty of late gras. Ripe, somewhat sweet late tannins show up, the wine ending generously. Good length, with local glow. From mid-2014. 2030-32 Dec 2011

2009

(to be bottled next month) full red robe, black tints. Smoky black fruit, leather, raisin – is punchy. Smoky-oaky, crisp start to palate, which holds wiry tannins, has stiff moments with gras present, chalky late notes and drive in it. There is richness at the end, which reflects Christmas foods and times. From 2014. 2027-29 March 2011

2006

(vat/casks) quite a dark robe; mulled, brewed red fruits aroma with some pepper and the darkness of Christmas cake in it. This is a rich, oily, textured wine where beef stock is mixed in with black berries. Is a chunky, intrinsically powerful do. It just keeps the lid on its muscle and power. Its tannins and oak demand it be left until 2011. It is rather demanding and obvious, has a slightly forced nature. 2025-27 Nov 2007

2005

dark red-black; oak charcoal leads the nose, the inlay behind reflecting licorice, smoke, burnt airs – it is a beefy, he-man nose. The palate has a broad shape, with plenty of stuffing. The oak asserts from half way over its prune, plum flavours, and there is a sweet date taste late in the piece. Wide wine, whose power is well wrapped. It is a little bit cellar constructed. Has a lot of tannin and needs time. I find it less impressive than on first tasting before bottling – it has ingested vintage qualities of reticence and toughness and needs to find its feminine side. From 2011. 15°. 2026-29 June 2008 Previously Nov 2006 ****** tea, brewed coffee topping to a sappy, black fruit underlay on the bouquet, with some tar and mint mixed in – wee drops of tannin here. Sweet-toned, silken textured flavours, this flows well and seamlessly. Needs to be drunk when some chinks of light appear, such as 2011 onwards. Well channelled towards the finish, shows grip and a rounded finale with coffee and cocoa present. This is very beau, this is Grand Vin. 2027-30 Nov 2006

2001 ()

oily, garrigue, “high” fruit, violet airs – a pretty deep bouquet. The palate is densely packed, the flavour one of black jam, bears some spice, with licorice entering late on. Has a lot of suave, tight flavour. Full, polished wine. 2018-21  March 2003
