The Wines

95-100% Grenache, 0-5% Mourvèdre, from galet stone covered clay-limestone soils on Les Escondudes (S-E), destemmed, 3-4 week vinification at up to 28°C, daily cap punchings, pumping overs, 50% concrete vat, 50% steel vat raised 18 months (until mid-2010s 12 months), filtered, “drink with meats in sauce, grilled meats, game, cheese”, 40-50,000 b

(steel vat/concrete vat) sombre dark plum colour. Sweet-toned nose with prune and thick red berry jam airs. The palate starts with some good, wavy spiced content, has fair weight, comes with some charge in the tannins. It is Grenache-centric, perhaps could have been a mite more ripe before harvesting, to allow a fulfilling run all along the palate. There is some drift on the finish. 14.6°. 19,000 b. 100% Grenache. €17.90. From mid-2021. 2036-38 Oct 2018

2016 ()

(vat) quite a dark red colour, legs visible. There is strength in the raspberry aroma on the nose, some sweet herbs and oregano, a beefy aspect. The palate holds rich red fruits with a thick texture, marches on with some purpose, brings in also thick tannins. The finish involves kirsch, cherry fruits. It just about keeps its power under control, though there is some glow on the aftertaste. 15.5°. 50,000 b. From 2020. 2035-38 Oct 2017

quite a dark red robe. The nose is robust, leads on black cherry fruit, with a note of lamb stock. The palate is loose, with its red stone fruit lacking an anchor of content to give it ballast. There is a live acidity through it. This is middle of the road wine. Time is needed, but it can come together and amplify. 15°. From 2018. 2030-33 Sept 2016

2014 ()

(vat) fair red robe. Has a soft red berry fruit aroma, one that sits back in the glass but can develop, has a sunny aspect. The palate bestows a tasty berry fruit with polished tannins in tow. This will be a harmonious and pleasurable drink, has decent balance and length. Subtle and appealing. From 2017. 2025-27  Oct 2015

2012 ()

(vat) dark red; facile blackberry aroma, a ripe curve, has licorice, mocha-tar notes, is a bit tough. The palate is chunky, uneven; the fruit-tannin mix is on the stretch, fails to convince that it will fuse equally. The fruit comes and goes; it shows a spot of late heat, tar, burn. The ending is sudden. From mid-late 2015. 15°. €16.60. 2024-26  Nov 2013

2011 ()

rather pale red. Stewed, mixed bag bouquet, a touch animal. Has a sweet liqueur style, with tea and a cool under note. The palate bursts on stage with red berry fruit, some explosion. It picks up light mineral expression towards the finish, which dries, becomes gummy. A bit disorderly now. The finish is a concern. From 2015. 15°. 2026-28  Dec 2012

2010 ()

modest, rather see-through red robe. The nose is limited, shows very light red fruit. The palate is similar – light and uninspiring. It has no technical fault, but is far too light and unmemorable for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It has a little floral-herb exit. Now to 2016-17 Dec 2011

rather bright red robe; easy plum, baked red fruits aroma, some baked stones present – this reflects 2009 correctly, the shimmer of heat. Herbal qualities on the palate – this has a firm grip in its second half, a little dash of freshness and smoky bite. The end reflects the dry year. From mid-2012. €13.10. 2021-23 Oct 2010

mild red; floating aroma, which like the robe is not that profound, also a bit reductive, bears flowers and light raspberry jam. The palate has a mild debut, red jam flavour that travels quietly along without real thrills and spills. The ending is low-key. This is light for a Châteauneuf-du-Pape – does not convince, although it is aromatic. Is a bit short on the finish. To 2018. Nov 2008

pale red, Grenache prominent. Raspberry, plum jam aroma, with some sweet n`crackle together in it – it is rather doing too much too soon, the sweet, facile jam side prevails today. The palate carries oily red fruit, has heart, gains tannins as it goes. This is, like the nose, sweet and facile. A wine that lacks nuance and is simple – you get what you see, and drink now. Should not be expensive. To 2011-13 Nov 2008
