very dark; the bouquet is nicely settled around a cosy air of blackberry, with a note of raspberry, some oiliness from the ripe harvest. It has a floral touch, and is a clam opening. The palate is gracious on the attack, comes with a soft, almost plump content that is thickened by the oak, which lays a little heavily on it. It’s drinking well now, with just a little darkness on the finish, can be left until 2021 spring. It’s a very steady St Jo red, nice and thorough, perhaps a mite better, fresher with less oak: but the vines are young, so take that into account. 13.5°. 2027-28 Feb 2020

2016

regular red robe; raspberry with smoke-pine notes shows on the nose, has a breezy backdrop. The palate gives tight, almost wiry raspberry fruit; there’s a steely feel to it, and it ends on chalky tannins. This is a spare style of St Jo, one with not a lot of flesh. A floral touch towards the finish is helpful. We are very much in New Wave territory here. 13°. 2026-27 Dec 2018
