The Wines

1950s/1960s Syrah from 1 hectare on rotted granite, gore soils on Combe, destemmed (before 2010s whole bunch, then part destemmed), 14-15 day vinification, pumping overs, cap punching, aged 8-10 year 400-litre casks 12-18 months (reduced from 18-24 months), fined, unfiltered

2018 ()

shiny, dark red; airs of wild hedgerow black fruits, with pine-bosky notes, black pepper cluster on the nose. The palate is based on cooked red fruits, with sinew in the tannins, the end crunched. It’s a bit raw, but has been in bottle for only two weeks. 13°. €19. From 2022. 2033-34 Dec 2019

2017

quite a full red colour. The nose shows reduction, has airs of stewed red fruits, the sweetness of strawberry jam. The palate is also on a path of stewed red fruits, with close-knit tannins that enter at the mid-point, a compote of red berries central. It’s country wine, can sort itself further on the palate. 13°. From spring 2021. 2032-34 Dec 2019 Previously Dec 2018 *** dark red; the nose has a floral-rose delicacy above red fruits, cooked plums’ airs. The palate is restrained, raspberry fruit gently delivered before tannins that are a tiny bit furry. This is regular Cornas, with fair structure. It requires food to soften the close. It holds more integrity than the polished up school of Cornas, though. 13°. Bottled five weeks ago. €18. 2028-29 Dec 2018

2016 ()

plum red colour, a clear robe. The nose has a stewed plums air, strawberry jam, a hint of lead pencil. The palate holds brewed red fruits, fragrant and floral notes, with an increase in tannin, rather dusty tannin, towards the finish. The balance is wonky; the content/fruit doesn’t carry far enough, nor is it fresh enough. The white coats would find it oxidative. 13°. €18. 2021-22 Dec 2018

2014

bottled two weeks ago: quite a dark red robe. The bouquet features brambly blackberry fruit jam aromas with a little smokiness – it is a good, medium weight, authentic nose. The palate goes directly, down a straight line, has quite bold tannins. It is a little spare, but is pretty true. The finale is chalky, so wait until late 2016. 13°. €16. 2020-21  Dec 2015

2013

dark red colour. The bouquet is smoky, comes with a little air of violets, the fruit a mix of blackberry and raspberry: it is maturing well. This has a good, spring start, has the steely side of the vintage and puckering tannins. It needs another 15 months to arrange itself; the fruit has a dark red, mulberry style quality. Authentic Cornas. 13°. 2021-22 Dec 2015

2005 ()

red colour that is a touch transparent at the top. Hearty nose, with something of the bosky woods about it. The palate holds a little early gras or richness, with some tannic grip around it. Its fruit and make-up are both traditional. The length is fair – it continues OK. To 2012 Dec 2008

2004

mild red colour; soft, brambly red fruit aroma with gentle appeal. Grainy red fruit on the palate that starts with a supple tone, then gains a thread of mineral. Some baked red fruit shows up on the end. Lacks a little flesh, finishes a little dry. 2010-11 Dec 2006

2003

the red fruit aroma persists quite well, with pepper fringes to it. Nice red jam flavour, accompanied by a little earthiness. The texture is rounded, calm. The length is OK. Has some end tannin in support, which is just about integrated. To 2011. Dec 2006

2002 ()

reserved, light black fruit scent, can come along. Nicely unforced black fruit gum flavour, then tightens, acidity shows through. Fruit a bit dull. From late 2006. 2012-13

2001

suave loganberry fruit/floral aroma; stylish, soft black fruit, touch of violet, genuine. Slight tannins. 2010-12
