The Wines

100% Roussanne (50% 2014, 50% 2015) from 0.29 hectare on limestone with clay soils at 300 metres on Giraud Les Côtes at Châteaubourg, 36 hour cool decantation, fermented, raised 50% new, 50% 1-year 228-litre oak casks 12-13 months, malo completed, first year as St Jo 2018, 800 b

yellow robe; has a pear-nut aroma, a grapey and nutty start it is. The palate is tight, on oak, firm content, is structured, compact, ends freshly, shows spearmint there. This is spinal, grippy wine for la table. 14°. 800 b. 50% new, 50% 1-year oak. Bottled 18 Nov 2019.  Best to go for this mid-2020 on. 2026-27 Dec 2019

2017 ()

this is called Vin de France Rien, and is Non Vintage,  with the vines not yet ready to be St Jo: off white, opaque robe. Pear fruit features in a restrained nose, a hint of apricot, vanilla from the oak. The palate comes with a suave texture, holds easy gras, is a tiny bit top heavy, is a table wine. I find it a bit OTT Over The Top, though it does have some finesse. “It has a pH of 3.40, even with its 15°,” Ludovic Izérable. 15°. €20. 2021-22 Dec 2018
