The Wines

late 1990s Syrah from Coteau des Rodets at Ozon, pre-fermentation crop cooling 5 days at 5-6°C, 3-week whole bunch vinification at up to 28°C (first whole bunch 30% in 2014), twice daily pumping overs, a few cap punchings, aged 3-8 year 600-litre oak casks 12 months, then vat raised 4 months, unfined, unfiltered, “drink with red meats, game, lamb, charcuterie”

2018 ()

dark red; menthol, eucalyptus, licorice, blackberry fruit come forward in a bouquet of springy life, which carries good freshness and vegetal tones. The palate rests on a flavour of black fruit pastilles, roller skates on the attack, then tightens and concentrates a lot, ends with real compact crunch from the whole bunches. The juice is concentrated, ambushes the palate. I find it a wee bit exerted. There’s a violet note on the aftertaste. Decant it. 13.3°. From mid-2021. 2032-34 Feb 2020

2016

dark red colour. The nose has a musky, perfumed aroma with a little incense, and grilling, the fruit resembling strawberry jam. The palate is also musky, has a plump plum fruited content with a little tightness, a spur of rockiness, in the tannins. I like its quiet intensity, nothing hurried here. It will interest the informed drinkers, though I sense a little vegetal presence on the glowing aftertaste that will take 12 months to infuse further. It has character. 13°. From 2019. 2023-24 Nov 2017

2014

(casks) sober quite dark red colour. There is a sweet strawberry aroma on the nose, a hint of grilling. The palate has a slightly stretched nature, delivers more red berry fruit with some gummy tannins. The juice has a compressed nature. This is traditional, suited to stews, for instance. 13°. To 2019  Oct 2015

2007

purple-mauve, bright robe; gracious, rather floral bouquet – shows gentle red jam aromas, with a little mineral on the side. A dart of black fruit starts the palate, in line with this young vineyard's profile. The finish is peppery, tight, grainy. To 2015. March 2009 Previously Dec 2008 *** mid-depth red, some black. This has a blackberry jam and licorice aroma that widens late on. The palate is grassroots by nature – has blackberry fruit with a slight earthy, grounded nature. Tannins surfaces at the end, is tangy and the aftertaste is menthol. There are scented moments on the palate. To 2015 Dec 2008
