The Wines

100% Syrah (1989-1993) from pebbly clay-limestone soils on Fayolle at Beaumont-Monteux, destemmed, 4 week vinification, 3-4 cap punchings at start, aged new & 1-year 600-litre oak casks 18-20 months, unfined, filtered, “the last plot harvested, I seek complexity, length”, 4,400 b

(casks) very full robe; the bouquet swirls with free dark fruits, has a note of oak, leans towards the South with a black olive presence. The palate is well filled, bears bustling raspberry fruit with generosity and persistence. It has inner strength, in the eye of the vintage. The fruit carry is good, rather swell, and the tannins are ripe. It will fill a large glass well. From 2022. 2031-33 Nov 2019 Previously Nov 2018 **** (steel vat, sugars, malo completed) full red colour; the nose is on reduction, has an early vitality, iodine, typical Beaumont-Monteux, black cherries, roast nuts, some lees, good raw goods, and true to its place. The palate is nicely juiced, glides well, has good length, a real bonny surge on the second half, good reach. There are saline moments and black olives, with grain-powder tannin. This is STGT pre-oaking. From 2022. 2033-35 Nov 2018

2017 ()

(tank, bottling “when it pleases me”) dark, shiny robe; the bouquet is sturdy, filled, has a sure depth in its black fruits, a sense of mulberry, has style within. The palate engages immediately, shows very good typicity, is a Rock on Tommy, STGT Beaumont-Monteux, with many stimuli, including flowers, violets, has a lot of life in it, is good and tuneful, nicely deep. There is oak present. It has striking length and gusto, shows real flair on the second half, is a great drop of wine. From 2021. €20. 2033-34 Nov 2018

2016 ()

(casks) sober dark robe. There is a note of iodine, sea shore above a line of red berry fruit, mulberry-raspberry, with a drift of violets, and a hint of oak: the nose is quietly intricate. The palate is firm, still on its oak casing, with some stylish black fruit within. It ends on the tarry sign-off of the oak and the tannins. It’s rather rigid for now, so leave until mid-2018. 13°. To 2023 Nov 2017

2015 ()

sombre, quite dark red robe. The bouquet is starting its second phase, is on beef stock, the oak backing off, cooked plum fruit just coming out – it’s in transition. The palate is rich and rolling, but a bit dispersed in its offer, has sound filling, is genuine, not polished up. This received 19 months raising. 13°. 2031-33 Nov 2018

2014 ()

quite a dark red colour; the nose is on an appealing second phase, raspberry liqueur, some oak, a note of damp forest. The palate bears clove, spicing, appealing fruit within, tender red fruits, raspberry. It drinks well now, will be great with lamb or veal chop with rosemary. It’s very sound wine in a tricky year. 12.5°. 2022-23 Nov 2018
