2019 ()

(1-year 228-litre cask, bottling Jan 2021) very dark robe; the nose is inky, brewed black fruits, coffee-licorice, blue fruit. The palate is broad and engaging, goes off on classy texture and persistence, develops with a very sure hand, real consistent flow. The balance signals the mark of a top vintage when you have this balance and no pauses, hiccoughs. There are nice powdery tannins, a touch of oak-flowers on the end. “It’s an attractive keeping Crozes red,” Denis Basset. 14.4°. pH of 3.80-3.97. 2036-38 Feb 2020

2018 ()

dark red; peppery, black-fruited air, licorice, bosky-oak-pepper notes, a hint of dried herbs. The palate holds prune flavoured stone fruits, supple gras, squeezy tannin. The texture is agreeable, and there are plump notes, floral dabs. It’s joli Crozes, classic Crozes, sustains well, is good table wine. Bottled two days ago. “I am surprised by its velvet, roundness, it’s rather powerful,” Denis Basset. 14.1°. From late 2021. 2028-29 Feb 2020

2017 ()

dark red; oily, sun ray filled bouquet, black jam blackberry, is close-knit, so decant it. It’s just entering a closed phase. The attack is solid, comes with firm content, in the mid-palate as well. There is sound mass here – this is solid wine, good essence in the fruit, a close-knit sense of black jam. The tannins bring a firm couch, the length good, the finish lip smacking. This is more resolute than the 2019 and 2018. “It will be good in five years; I like fleur at five to six years’ old”, Denis Basset. 14°. 2030-32 Feb 2020

black-purple robe; has an oak top air, with ripe, quite squeezy black fruit under that, comes with pistachio in it, green olive trimmings. The attack is juicy, and it spreads across the glass, with tar, smoke, oak darkness in its late moments. A wine in preparation – it is not there yet, is also a bit mechanical in its making. From 2014: the longer it is left, the more character it will show. 2019-20 Nov 2011

steady red; cake-brioche bread, yeasty top air, a hint of red fruit. The palate offers mild fruit, lacks cut; a wine in transition, modest wine that shortens. Not in great shape now. From mid-2012. 13°. 2016-17 Nov 2011

wide, violet-scented aroma – the fruit within is cautious, and there is a note of charcoal from the oak. The palate black fruit has the grip of tannin around it, while the malo done in oak comes through, and renders the wine a little plush in its later stages. From 2010, or decant it before then to free it up. 2016-17 March 2009
