2018 ()

(casks) very dark, handsome robe; the bouquet is well charged, has bustling depth and energy, good layers of mature black fruits, a stylish sweetness. The palate captures the sweet, rolling nature of the vintage, runs smoothly, good weight and liberal black juice throughout. The tannins are smoked, flexible, fit in well. This has late charge, finishes well, with plenty of drive, a finale on a perfumed, granite-derived sign-off. It’s full and vivid. €31. From 2022-23. 2037-39 Nov 2019


(casks) full, very dark red colour; the bouquet is curvy, gives a creamy air of blackberry fruit, licorice, is rather a swell start. The palate follows suit, based on generous black cherry fruiting with a sweet tone to it, the tannins rounded and gummy on the finish. It’s a spotless, polished St Jo with oaking that is considered running through it. It could have more soul, is very, very polite. The fruit lasts well, so it just makes ****. From mid-2020 at the earliest. 2032-34 Dec 2018

2016 ()

(casks) shiny, attractive black with purple robe. The nose is elegant, offers pure black fruits with a little ripe oiliness present. The palate runs with fine content, black berries that glisten well. This has a serene, calm style, is well above average in its quality of fruit and tannin that fit together harmoniously. There is a dainty detail in it. Very attractive St Jo red. 13°. From mid-2018. 2028-31 Nov 2017


(casks) dark colour. The nose gives blackberry fruit with an inner snap of tension. Black cherry and licorice combine. The palate comes with a good flow of wavy black cherry fruit and salted tannins, reaches out well. It’s a good orb on the finish, a tasty depth showing there. This is a genuine St Jo, and will be great with red meats, bingo! From 2018. 2030-32 Oct 2016


(casks) full, deep robe. The bouquet has a crisp, salted air of black cherry with some oak in evidence, as well as licorice. After the direct lines of the nose, the palate corresponds with a streamlined delivery of black cherry fruit, coulis in style. The tannins are buzzy, and it ends with running fruit and lift. Way to go, good restaurant St Jo, lots of pep. From mid-2017 to absorb some oak. 2025-27  Oct 2015 

2013 ()

(casks) very dark; well-filled, copious nose, mixes coulis, mulled fruits with a rounded sweetness and a note of roast beef. There is a small hint of violets, too, which is helpful. This is polished wine: the fruit runs along in appealing waves, and the second half shows oak, the persistence good. It is all going in the right direction, is a good, mouth-filling St Jo, an expressive northern Rhône Syrah. It is a confident bet - go and buy. full robe. Blackberry liqueur, warm, rounded and open bouquet that suggests rays of sun in its smooth offering. The palate gives an immediate display of black cherry fruit, backed by licorice-inspired tannins. It flows fully and freely. There is a crisp little knuckle on the finish, more grain there. Get up and go Saint-Joseph; this will be fun to drink in 2015. 13.5°. 2024-26 Nov 2013


bottled 30 Oct 2012: dark robe, legs. Reserved, chunky nose with an oak surround, with fruit off dusty granite inside – there is a sparky air on top of the black fruit. The palate is in thrall to its raising – it shows chocolate, date, compact black fruit. The wine is possibly from young Syrah (tasted blind) – the fruit doesn’t obviously show through, is “domestic”. This is Saint-Joseph for food, and it needs two years to integrate further. Lacks soul, is arm’s length. 14°. 2022-24  Nov 2012


bottled two weeks ago: dark robe. Black cherry air, meat present, some scale on the nose, grilled pork, smoke, is wide and rather insistent, will develop. Has an assertive attack, is broad, filled with a mass of black fruit, oak pockets through it. It is also broad on the finish, and aspires to be noticed, not subtle. There is a late glow of heat. Has southern zone notions, black olive paste, rocks on well. From 2013. 2023-25 Nov 2011
