75-80% Grenache (1950s-1970s), 10% Syrah (late 1970s-early 1980s), 10% Mourvèdre (late 1970s-early 1980s), bit of Cinsault from clay-limestone soils, fermented separately, 3-4 week vinification, pumping overs, cap punchings, aged 50% concrete vat, 50% large barrel & 600-litre oak casks 18 months, (until 2009 was part raised 600-litre oak casks, part vat) unfined, filtered, 7-15,000 b

2017 ()

(vat/casks) dark, black-tinted robe. The bouquet is bold, deeply black-fruited, shows an intense black cherry, lingering black berry fruit and pine oak-chocolate. It has the vintage sweetness within. The palate is wavy, rolling, has the gourmandise of the vintage, is sunny and open, will please. A note of sweet coffee follows the black Morello cherry fruit. The tannins are pretty refined. The oak brings added sweetness, which borders on too much. 80% Gren, 10% Syr, 10% Mourv. From mid-2021. 2036-38 Oct 2018

2016

(large barrel) dark red. Has a crunchy, crushed nutshells aroma with a ripe backdrop of black raisin, prune fruit, grilling. It has some of the baked strength of the vintage. The palate bears agile, wavy black fruits, with smooth tannins set within. There is plenty of juice to keep it fluid and enjoyable, a murmur of power as it closes, with a stream of red fruit there. This is nice and natural Gigondas, with a genuine approach. 14°. 7,000 b. From 2020 to integrate it further. 2032-34 Oct 2017

2015

(vat/barrel/casks) dark red robe, some brilliance. The nose gives a snug aroma led by blackberry, with inner sweetness, a nicely founded appeal. The palate is genuine, carries a wholesome depth of wavy content, the tannins encircling it closely. There is lots of enjoyable Grenache at its centre, as well as little flashes of freshness along its path. A thoroughly likeable bottle that will give drinkers an accurate idea of Gigondas. 2014

dark red colour. The nose has prune, slight date airs, a supple, near mulled fruits quality, with pepper. The palate gives a spiced Grenache-inspired red fruit, cooked plum and raspberry. There is a hint of herbes de Provence. The content is supple, and it drinks pretty well now, with just a touch of light tannin on the close. 14°. 2021-22  Dec 2015

2013 ()

red robe, has sheen. The nose presents raspberry fruit with a latent rocky smokiness, airs of garrigue mixed herbs, is nice and local. The palate delivers direct red berry fruit, with some chiselled tannins present. It is a tiny bit exerted. The texture is grainy. It hasn’t reached a consistent flow, and will benefit from being left until 2018 for more fusion and a little more amplitude. 14°. 7,000 b. €12.50. 80% Gren, 10% Syr, 10% Mourv. 2026-27  Dec 2015 Previously Dec 2014 *** (barrel) purple-garnet robe. Toasted oak on the nose – the oak present but not objectionable. Likewise on the palate, where the fruit and acidity are a little disassociated at present. Has a firm, if slightly drying finish. 2011 ()

(vat) shiny, full red. Laurel and mixed herbs are present in a fluid red fruit bouquet, has good and rolling snap. The nose is very welcoming, reflects the garrigue. There is fine acidity in a well-fruited palate. Has nice life and freedom, and is potentially stylish, clean wine: for now, it is just a bit arm’s length. It is tidy, orderly, a little bit pristine. The aftertaste is oaked. From mid-2014. €11.50 export. 14°. 2025-26  Dec 2012

2010

(vat) dark, filled robe. Wide-shouldered, chunky nose – blackberry fruit, licorice, beef stock with pine and menthol airs – it is an inky start. The palate starts directly, delivers pointed black fruit juicing, with licorice and snappy tannins in its oily later texture. It ends on coffee, a little violet, its gras richness securely installed. Feels a bit heavy on the cellar work. It is in a raw state now, drink from 2015, say. There is glow, gasp on the aftertaste. 2030-31 Dec 2011

2009 ()

(vat) shiny, medium red colour. Black fruit aroma, with gamey notions and a peppery tightness. Modest black fruit on the palate – it lacks sparkle, ends on chocolate, built-up notes, with tannins prominent. The mid-palate briefly gives the sense of some potential. Indian tea, baked plum exit, the finish is very dry. Not sure if this can make it. From 2013. 2019-20 July 2011

2008

substantial, quite dark robe, black tints. The bouquet has depth, creamy black fruit, but there are signs of yeast, Brett. The palate offers initial black fruit, but dries from half way, becomes curly, withers. Be careful. Slightly herbal aftertaste. Not sure about the balance. To 2018. €7.30 ex cellars. July 2011

2007 ()

full robe, matt hints. Red cherry, unctuous nose with prune, violet and leather, sweet China tea airs. Spiced debut to the palate, which is all in fullness after that, a waxy style on the second half, with woven ripe tannins that leave a firm exit. A gutsy wine for stews, roast meats with ample gravy over them. 2020-22 July 2011

2006 ()

(vat) dark red; meat stock top note to the nose, lamb stock and the herbs with it as well. Oak-bacon influences are also here, suggesting power to come – this can be broad and imposing. The red fruits on the palate dart around, I can sense the muscle in its well-founded tannins. A wine of scale – be patient, and match with strongly flavoured foods. Wide, manly wine, promising. 2005 No Rating

2 bottles tried (tasted blind). Dark plum colour. One bottle has an aromatic, lateral bouquet, rather fundamental, compact raspberry. Ripe start to the palate with some richness in the red fruits, some tannic drive. A wine that may close. The other bottle was led by Grenache and reductive mulled red fruits on the nose, but showed Brett and dry tones. Needs to be reviewed. June 2008

2004 ()

2 bottles tried: quite a dark robe; brewed, black berry aroma that is reductive – shows some meatiness, also violet. The palate suggest some volatility; there is some unease in its make-up. There is black cherry in the aftertaste, some richness on the finish. Without the reduction, it would be a lot better – there is some quality here and the core fruit isn't bad. To 2014. Dec 2006

2003

rich tea aroma that is biscuity and has black fruit behind. Ripe on the palate but its richness is not secure. Ends a bit vacantly and is rather potent. Dry-toned, floral aftertaste. From 2007. To 2012. July 2005

2001

attractive, floral bouquet with rounded aromas. Agreeably soft palate, nice richness right now, with a jam texture also. Some pepper here, is marked correctly by its Grenache. Simple wine, needs drinking now until 2007. July 2005

2000 ()

elegant, floral aroma of suave appeal. Beau fruit and harmony on the palate – this is nicely done. Has pretty, sweet-tinged fruit, a wine of charm. Length is OK. 2012-13 July 2005
