Syrah (av age 26 years) from granite soils (northern sector) & stony alluvial soils (southern sector), destemmed, 3-4 day pre-fermentation crop cooling at 12-14°C, 16-20 day concrete vat vinification, part vat emptying/refilling, twice daily pumping overs, cap punching, part steel vat, part 400-litre oak cask raised 9-11 months, filtered, organic wine, “drink with charcuterie, grilled red meats, stews”, 7,650 b

2018 ()

full red colour; the nose has a cooked Bramley apple aspect, crushed nutshells, is a touch raw, almost still in the vat, a little gloopy. The palate holds dark, smoky fruit content, is under the influence of its bottling just now. It’s not as one as yet, which raises questions; it’s too ripe. I note the degree – 14.5° on the label, and consider it in thrall to the high heat of the vintage. From 2021, decanting necessary. 2025-26 Nov 2019

2017 ()

full red robe. Smoky, darting aroma on the nose, involves blue fruit, mulberry, cordite, a hint of prune. The palate bears cool content, dark fruit with a good cut in it, tannins that are decisive, salted, a shade chalky. This travels with energy, is a fresh, rather spontaneous Crozes, a good production from such a large organisation. 2024-25 Dec 2018

2016

(vat) dark red. The nose has a clouded air of black berry fruit, a plushness, a hint of perfume. It’s a little static. The palate holds stewed black berry fruits as its core flavour, followed by munchy tannins that bulk up the close, adding an extra tier there. It’s a wine on the thick more than racy side of town, a little low in spark. What it will do is fuse better with another 18-24 months, since I sense the granite wants to come out and play on the closing, more mineral, stages. From mid-2019. 2025-27 Nov 2017

2015

deep robe. The nose has an air of simmered blackberries, a little blueberry freshness. It’s ripe and pretty rounded. The palate gives a rolling wheel of juicy, plump black-fruited content, followed by a smoky, charcoal tang. It is easy to drink, with a full mouthful awaiting, and no real hidden nuances. Bottled already. 14°. 2021-22 Oct  2016

2014 ()

(casks) deep full red robe, black present. The early nose is dense, collects blackberry, quite lush fruit, licorice. The palate breaks out of the mulled nature of the nose with a stream of rather cool dark fruit, helping its live run to the finish. There is a collection of still a little edgy tannin there, a smokiness from the oak. This has character. Its depth drifts a tiny bit on the finish. From 2017. 2021-22  Oct 2015

2013 ()

dark red. Low key meatiness, some road tar in a rather craggy, savoury bouquet – it also assembles stewed fruits that have a soft sweetness present. This attacks on a sound flow of soft dark berry fruit, has good weight, and picks up tannin as it goes; it bears the fresh length of the vintage. The finish is compact.  From mid 2015. 13°. 2020-21 Jan 2015
