The Wines

Syrah from Gervans, destemmed, pre-fermentation crop cooling at 12-14°C, 16-20 day vinification, part vat emptying/refilling, twice daily pumping overs, aged 33% new, 67% 1-3 year 400-litre oak casks 12 months, unfined, filtered, first wine 2016

2018 ()

(casks) inviting dark red robe; the nose reflects the high heat of the year, masking the usual Gervans coolness, gives a plush, crushed berry aroma, notes of violets, musky flowers present. The palate continues that theme, is munchy, rather fat, bears squeezy richness, flexible tannins, has a near sultry sign-off, the length OK. Allow this the time to take on more structure and clearer definition, so it’s not really a wine for youthful drinking - too much wading in thick waters as it were. From 2023. 2034-36 Nov 2019

2016 ()

(casks) full, dark red. The nose is smoky, dances with an unleashed black pepper air, cordite and graphite, coffee mixing with its blackcurrant fruits. The palate is more serene, carries a rose-noted delicate richness with soft tannin that end in a little spark, rocky tang right on the close. It shows the mineral thread of its origins, the spine surrounded by careful content for now. Allow until late 2019 for fusion of elements, including oak. 2026-27 Nov 2017
