The Wines

Syrah (late-1980s) from granite, migmatite soils on lower slopes at 170 metres at Arras, middle sector, destemmed, 30 day vinification, pumping overs, part vat emptying/refilling, cap punching, raised 35% new, 23% 2-year, 42% 3-year 400-litre oak casks 18 months, filtered, first year 2017

(casks) very dark robe; the bouquet is interesting, refined and full at the same time. There’s an inner aroma of plum, prune fruit, with a minted sideline. You can sense the sun’s rays in it. The palate carries enjoyable dark fruited content with style in its delivery, a spine that keeps it on track and moving forward. The fruit is lucid enough given the high heat of the summer, and there is abundance on the agenda, offset by the fine grain of the tannins. It represents its place soundly. From 2022. 2037-39 Nov 2019

2017 ()

(casks) full, deep robe; the nose shows the typically mild black fruit of Arras, comes with a trim sweetness, oaking and caramel in play also. The palate bears a steady richness, is savoury, fleshy, comes with ripe tannins. Its shape is round, the aftertaste on toffee from the oak. There’s plenty here, which will catch the drinker’s attention. From mid-2020. 2031-32 Dec 2018
