The Wines

95% Syrah (early 1970s), 5% Grenache from galet stone covered clay-limestone soils, destemmed, 18-22 day concrete vat vinification, wild yeasts, daily pumping overs, part vat emptying/refilling, concrete vat raised 3 months, then 2-5 year 600-litre oak casks 12-14 months, unfined, filtered, biodynamic wine, 1,400-3,200 b

classic purple-hued dark red Syrah robe; the bouquet shows a little reduction, so allow this to air. It’s filled with stylish, lightly sweet black berry fruits, has a firm, layered surround. It doesn’t cross the line into Southern Rhône Syrah excess. The palate is juicy, in the instant, with pleasing depth and ripe tannins extending it carefully. This is tasty, well done Jean-Fréd. The finish has a light note of menthol that aids its drinkability. There is a note of carbonic gas that plays a low-key role in its freshness. It’s drinking well now, can offer more over the next couple of years. It’s a wine to best appreciate via its youthful fruit. 13.5°. 2026-28 July 2020

very dark, full robe. Has a broad, muscular bouquet, real density in its black fruits, some meat stock notes, a hint of cool blueberry, hood mixed black fruits. The palate comes with suave, stylish black fruits, rather classy content, while there’s good freshness streaming along it, which stands out on the salted close. The cool tenor of this works well in the context of the very sunny vintage; this has very genuine, cracking length. It will knit together well. 13.5°. 3,200 b. From mid-2020. 2031-33 Sept 2018

full red robe. The nose is warmly filled with a black berry, black jam, fruit aroma, has a ripe inner sweetness. It needs air to free it up, so it can fly more. There is a little tar. There is good Syrah black fruit here. The palate works on texture and a smooth coating of gras, black fruits present, with a good tannic support, the tannin clear. This works from within -  a good heart it has. A note of toffee on the aftertaste comes from its oak. The length is secure. This is juvenile, promising wine. Decanting advised. From mid-2018. 2023-24 Sept 2017

(casks) dark red. The bouquet offers a neat ball of blackberry, damson plum fruit, its curvy shape appealing. The palate issues easy, fluid dark stone fruits with a surge thanks to its degree, a sort of spirity drive. The finish revolves around black cherry and a light tannic and garrigue dusting. This drinks well now, with some early vigour. 14°. 1,500 b. €8. 2019-20  Feb 2016
