The Wines

100% Syrah from granite & mica-schist soils at Sécheras (33%, 2011) & decomposed granite with loess & hard granite soils at Ozon (67%, 2001, southern sector), vineyards at Arras to come on stream, 2-3 week vinification, 75-100% whole bunch, raised used 70% 600-litre oak casks & 30% Spanish amphores 15-18 months, first wine 2015 (1,500 b), 2,400-3,500 b

dark red; has a ripe, curvy nose based on black fruit, blackberry on wheels, liqueur de Dijon. The palate is aromatic, bears black fruits that gleam, a real tasty display with enjoyable tannins. This gives lots of pleasure, is a St Jo of energy, flavour, the tannins largely inside, so it’s OK to drink now. 2025-26 Feb 2020

2017 ()

(bottling Apr 2019) hit by hail this year, so the wine only came from Ozon: dark robe. There’s a cassis-blueberry mix on the nose, blood, red meats, violets. The palate is tight, drawn in, needs time, is iron filled, currently a bit rigorous, though it displays juice all through, and is clear. There are restrained, vegetal notes on the finish. From mid-2020 at the earliest. 3,500 b. 100% whole bunch. 2028-30 Feb 2019

2016 ()

shiny dark red. Blackberry lozenge, licorice airs, a touch of sweetness, good curve and appeal, light crunch from the stems and some smokiness. This attacks well, bears upbeat black fruits, with trim tannins, freshness. This is nice and natural. There are floral touches along the palate. This leans in style towards the south of the appellation more than the north. It finishes a bit loosely, is rather timid on the close, its sole defect. Bottled Dec 2017. 2023-24 Feb 2018 Previously Nov 2017 *** (casks/amphores) very dark robe, centre of black. The bouquet has a savoury, warm style, is perfumed, has a note of grilling ahead of its soaked black fruits. It could be clearer, should be post bottling. The palate bears black cherry fruits delivered with a touch of acetate, which intrudes to some extent. This has a crisp take, is a direct St Jo, a little clipped in its expression. The aftertaste is straight, clinical. 12.8°. 2,400 b. From 2019. 2024-25 Nov 2017
