The Wines

50% Syrah (1975, 1980), 50% Grenache (1948-1970) from galet stone clay soils on Bel Air and a little La Ponche, hand harvested, destemmed, 25-30 day vinification, cap punching, pumping overs, 1 part vat emptying/refilling, aged 2-3 year old 600-litre oak casks 12-14 months, unfiltered, 4,000 b

the robe is dark, black-centred. The bouquet is crammed with black fruit, shows oaking, and certainly requires further time. The fruit resembles black cherry, has a liqueur, rather swish nature. The palate commences on immediate, robust content, carries streamlined fruit, polished tannins, runs into a savoury, oaked finale. The oak is about manageable, won’t dominate it over time. It’s a vigorous, no-nonsense Vacqueyras – drink from 2022. 14.5°. 50% Gren, 50% Syr. 2035-37 Feb 2020

dark robe, very full. The nose shows oak with a beef stock depth, a plunge of black cherry fruit. It has scale in part from the cellar. The palate is robust, also on its oak for now, with a surge of cherry fruit and tobacco towards the finish. Leave until spring 2020 to soften and fuse it. It flirts with extraction, which prevails over a sense of the vineyard. 14.5°. 50% Gren, 50% Syr. 2027-29 Feb 2018

2009 ()

nicely full robe; fresh, slightly leesy nose with plenty more to come, and marked by a real consistent layering underneath. It is laced with black pepper. The palate has a sturdy form, is solid, chiselled, thorough. Its tannins are upstanding and persistent. Its late shape is butty, solid, still square there. From 2013. 2020-22 July 2010

pretty full robe; wide and prominent nose – offers “dark” fruits and a local, earthy couch. A good, honest start, meaty and traditional. Oily black fruit lead on the palate – there is a good seam of dark fruit that rins on crescendo, keeps moving, delivers local bounty with no embellishment. A good, profound, STGT wine, for lovers of the Real Thing. 2017-18 July 2010

dark robe, in the house style. Chocolate-raisin, pretty aroma. The palate has a fragrant outer coating, with deep black fruit and tar in the interior. Black stone fruits and violet emerge towards the finish. Pepper-chocolate finish. I find this quite northern Rhône in its make-up. Is a vivid wine, weighs in at 15° plus a tad. From 2009. 2016-17 March 2007
