50-70% Grenache, 30-45% Syrah (late 1990s & older), 0-10% Mourvèdre from stony clay-limestone soils on Les Garrigues, planting density 4,000 vines per hectare, hand harvested, destemmed, crushed, 3 week vinification, twice daily pumping overs, 1-2 part vat emptying/refillings, 80-100% steel or concrete vat raised (Grenache), 0-20% raised 1-6 year 228-litre oak casks (30% of the Syrah) 15 months, fined, filtered, 16,000-51,000 b

quite a dark red, not bright; the nose has a gravy, beef stock aroma, low-key black fruit and a floral note in the second tier. The palate is spiced, a little dry, shows the baking of the heat of the summer. It ends with a rasping note, not much fun and games there. 14°. 16,000 b. 50% Gren, 40% Syr, 10% Mourvèdre. €11.50. 2026-27 Feb 2020

dark robe. The nose mixes black berry fruit, licorice, some bosky, near pine, airs. It’s now quite out and about, can blossom. The palate bears suave matter, a good style in it, loganberry, big black berry fruits at its centre. There’s depth in its juice, notably late on, and this can make progress. It has good inner depth that hasn’t yet been fully released. It holds up well on the finish. 14°. 65% Gren, 35% Syr. From mid-2019. 2029-30 Feb 2018

(vat/casks, bottling Sept 2018) red robe. The bouquet wells up on cherry fruit, liqueur strength, raspberry also. The palate presents a solid front, is muscled, spiced towards the finish, has ground force. This is solid wine, for red meats. It has no bells and whistles, extras. Decant it. From 2020. 2028-29 Feb 2018

2014 ()

red robe, a touch of evolution at the top. Has a Jammy Dodger, dried raisin biscuit aroma, a little red berry within; it’s not showing obvious fruit today. The palate is sinewed, holds a near wiry content, the tannins gummy late on. It’s not fully together, doesn’t release its wares openly. It will be better next year, but isn’t a star. Decant it. 14°. 2023-24 Feb 2018 Previously Dec 2015 *** (vat/casks) quite a dark red colour. Blackberry and mulberry set up the bouquet, has a cool quality. The palate holds suave cassis-blueberry fruit, with easy tannins, no great depth - so the impression is one of softness. This is easy going wine, simple and straightforward. 14.5°. 51,000 b. 55% Gren, 45% Syr. €11. From mid-2016. 2020-21  Dec 2015

2012 ()

(vat/cask) dark red. Good waves of blackberry come off the bouquet, a ripe fruit pastille style, raspberry also – the nose is sweet-noted, ripe, willing, broad. The palate expresses Grenache well, has a potent heart, and develops that as it goes. A nice and thorough Vacqueyras that travels with drive to the line, where there is a flint-smoke tang, lots of garrigue oomph. Smooth and continuous. From mid-2015. 40,000 b. €9.90 is GOOD VALUE. 60% Gren, 40% Syr. 2024-26  Dec 2013
