The Wines

1966 Syrah from Lieu-Dit Saint-Joseph at Tournon, destemmed, 25 day vinification, cap punching by foot, aged new 600-litre oak casks 12 months, filtered, called Cuvée André Péleat until late 2010s, 2,300 b

dark red; the nose has detail in its black fruit, powdered notes, blackberry present. This is modern style, technical approach St Jo. It is a little clamped by firm tannin, holds black fruit, the oak-tannin assertion strong on the second half. The oak suffocates the fruit too much. From 2021, but the fruit purity will lessen during that time. 2031-33 Dec 2019

2015 ()

(casks) dark robe, a full black tinted do. The nose is broad, chunky, reduced, has a keen line of blueberry fruit with licorice touches, some oaking. There’s a slight sense of extraction. The palate starts on bountiful, fleshy, firm content, delivers an open hand of black berry fruit, with slightly coarse tannin and their tar spots behind, meaning it finishes drily. The tannins are direct, sustained, and if they meld, all is well. The feel of exertion rather runs through it, so wait until spring 2019. 2027-29 Oct 2016

(casks, bottling Jan 2016) full, dark robe, legs visible. Soaked black berries, pork scratchings show on the nose which has an intense depth, with licorice and floral notes. This is one tasty meatball: it holds exuberant black fruit, lozenges, fruit such as cassis and blueberry, along with fine tannins, a good, quiet structure. This has good life and lift, is a real Road Runner. Its bonny fruit is very much on the go. From spring 2017. 2024-25  Dec 2015

2013 ()

quite a dark red colour. Smoky, compact blueberry aroma here, a sense of mulberry fruit as well – the bouquet has potential, will vary well. The palate gives menthol, spurs of freshness; this is a child of rocks, with that powder in the wine. The fruit, blueberry again, is subdued. Its tannins need 18 months, so drink from spring 2017. 13°. 2025-26  Dec 2015

shiny dark robe. Reduction shows in a bold, pretty fat fronted bouquet, which gives a copious trove of black berry fruit, along with menthol and juniper freshness: it is ripe and forthcoming. The palate links well to the nose, holds expressive gras richness and largely supple tannins. The fruit gives black cherries, the tannins spark to the wine. Lots of wine in the glass, a treat. Triple decant it. 13°. €22. 2023-24  Dec 2015

pretty dark red colour. Dates, cooked damson plums aroma, sweet prune, a murmur of cinnamon. The attack is perky, delivers sweet spice, nutmeg present, and good fire in its tannins. It is still rather a raw customer; the tannins have grainy fire and leave a slight dryness. Drink with stews, for instance. 13.5°. 2019-20  Dec 2015

2010 ()

dark robe. The nose is evolving slowly, gives prune, clove, a sense of dates. It has a fat tone. The palate delivers squeezy gras richness, with fluid, textured content until its tannins add rocky powder on the finish. Its coating is thick before the finish. It isn’t quite all as one. 13.5°. 2021-22 Dec 2015

rather dark robe. Reserved but agreeable cherry aroma, red jam in the air. The palate has a bout of gras in its centre. The Syrah fruit is mature rather than bright, but the wine has the virtue of not being lean on its second half – it is round. Good length, too. Above average for this vintage. 13.5°. To 2015. July 2010

quite a full dark red; has a brewed, black fruits, slightly plush aroma. The palate is infused, shows coffee, prune, date and rum cake flavours – the style is slightly oppressive. There are light tannins at the end. 12.8°. I would like more freedom in the wine, more flow, less of a studied, near super-ripe profile. 2013-14 March 2009

quite a dark robe; ripe, earthy aroma from long hang-time grapes, its underlay is of succulent red fruits. Palate is quite rich, comes in a round and fleshy gourmand style. Sweet red jam flavours with tannins well wrapped into it. Mature, rounded style of wine. From 2008. 2013-14 Nov 2006

grilled, grape skins nose. Dark style cooked fruits on palate, fairly savoury texture, then tightens and dries.

full, broad, grilled/tobacco nose. Meaty, black-fruited wine, tight-knit. Cooked fruits are quite intense. Some end gras. Esp 2006 on. 2012-13
